    Hi Jennie,

I have the same query as you, but looks like you do pay twice. This is what the pruhealth site says:

    How much will I pay?

You pay a one off £25 activation fee to join any of our partner gyms. Then you’ll get a discount of 25% off the usual price for full monthly individual Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing membership

Now, does anyone know how much is the usual rate for Nuffield gyms? (Leicester??)

Also interested in this, had a free trial at the local Nuffield gym (Worcester) a while back but the £55/month subscription kind of put me off. They having be advertising locally of late though that they've reduced their fees. Guess they may be feeling the effects of the credit crunch etc. ;)

What would be the cheapest health insurance you could sign up for and would that really be much less than 25% off a gym membership?
  • Hello

I am doing some research into budget gyms which are starting to open up around the UK and wondered if anyone here is an actual gym member. The clubs I am interested in are:

    Fitspace
    The Gym Group
    Pure Gym
    Fit4Less
    Fitness4less

They cost no more than £15 per month. Here is an example:

    fitspacegyms (co.uk)

I am interested to know if anyone has recently joined. If so, did you switch from a more expensive club, or join the gym for the first time. Also, if you have joined, what has been your experience so far. Do you see yourself staying? Would you recommend the club to a friend?

The research is for an industry report I am writing.

I hope that someone can give me the consumer's view of how good or otherwise these discount gyms are.

    Thank you

    Ray

Ps I hope that I have put this in the right forum - apologies if I have messed up

First time posting but been using the boards for information, tips and great money saving ideas for a long time :)

There is a Curves gym opened up a short while ago not that far from me, just at Junction 11 on the M8 and they are currently waiving their joining fee in return for a bag of shopping. They are asking for tins, packets, jars, pasta that type of thing and all the shopping they collect will be donated to the Women's Aid.

It was a girl at the hairdressers that was telling me, anyway, I have my induction on Tuesday.

I thought you were just being cryptic at first: a bag of shopping! Lol- thats a new one! Guess its better then the £30 or £50 most gyms ask for!

The gym options are really limited where I live, so I think I will have to bite the bullet and either pay £47 a month or use the local authority place, which seems really busy and the staff aren't really that helpful.
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

Sorry, Curves joining fee is £120 so to be able to join for a bag of shopping is a good deal, although it is still £30 a month.

When I was up at the Fort they also had a display/stand at the Asda Living store, and two ladies trying to get people to sign up for the inductions.

Whaaaaat?! £120!! Thats VERY high! But then £30 a month is very good (can't get anything below £44 in London, local council gym included unless your only willing to use the gyms before 5pm which for most of us is not possible)

I bit the bullet today too and joined Virgin! It actually worked out as only £15 more then my local council gym which still sounds alot but at my council run gym, aside from it needing a major clean, there are always queues after 5pm, the showers are more liks sprinklers and the hand dryer is more powerful then the hair dryer. One working toilet, studios with no air con.... I was so grateful to be able to go somewhere else after a month of it there!

If anyones wondering about prices in London:

LA Fitness is £70 a month (although I think they have some sort of a buy this membership for 18 months and pay for 12 but TBH I'd not do it. They have a sign up fee of £50? but I think they are waving it at the moment.

Fitness First I think (the black label which I tested out) was around the £80 a month, I didn't actually get a price as I didn't like the gym at all. Also a sign up fee but I think can be waved.

Nuffields is £75ish a month for 12 months or around £80 or slightly more for a rolling contract. They have a sign up fee too which is £50

Virgin is £70 a month for an annual or £75 a month for 3 months or £80 a month for one solo month. I used an offer which was 12 months for the price of 12 (brings my fees down to £58 a month, scary scary scary but partly a birthday/Xmas present!) but I think the offer ran out after today? maybe worth asking. They also have a sign up fee of around £50 but waved it, not sure how much longer they are doing that for though.

My local council gym costs around £44 a month which is shocking IMO.

Just joined puregym. Was sceptical, so contacted them first via twitter and spoke to their manager by email. They have a large viewing window by the entrance, so was advised to go down a couple of times at times I'd normally train (I go offpeak) to see how busy it was and I was pleasantly surprised.

It IS a budget gym (the ryanair of gyms :rotfl:) but the equipment is new, its all clean, and done with minimal operating costs:

The manager told me that you can effectively have an (upto) 14 day free trial, as the first DD is collected then and cancelling the DD cancels membership.
