Hi, I've been a member of David Lloyd for over a year. I think I'm paying too much per month for it, but I do use the facilites - so I don't want to cancel. Is it possible to phone them and 'threaten' to leave, so I can get a better deal? Has anyone tried this? How did you get on?
  • That certainly works if you try to cancel your phone contract but not sure that it would work with gyms. I think you'd need to have a good reason to leave but once you have a contract, it's difficult to get a better deal on it unless it's coming to an end.

Why not ask to speak to the manager, say you have been looking around and had been quoted X amount for say Virgin or LAfitness (If your in London thats £89 for virgin plus 2 months free if you sign up before the end of Jan, or £70 a month for LAFitness and 6 months free if you sign up for 18 months) Say your confused by the higher costs and wondered if there was any sort of loyalty discount for you staying on.

All they can say is no, and it may even make them think about customer retention a bit more (could offer more features in the comming months) you never know till you ask.
  • DW sports in northampton is only a 6 month contract min. also if u pop in or phone before the end of this month u get feb for free.

I got a leaflet at a Health and Fitness show for Crves gym, over 240 clubs in the UK, phone: 0800 130 0544.

Offer is for 'free' week. but then has in little writing :
Free week may be redeemed on first visit or exchanged for special membership discount. Not valid with any other offer.

So looks like you can only use the free gym offer if your totally new, and otherwise can use it as an offer to discount your membership.

It looks like the 30 mins in gym- I cannot do that- I'd need more! Is anyone here a member? is it possible to spend more the 30 minutes (more like 30 minutes per machine would be better)

30mins sounds a strange concept to some, I know as I actually work at Curves in Hove but honestly, if you work the machines properly then you really only need 30mins for a total workout!! Best thing to do is go in and take a look and take advantage of the free week. There's no obligation to join afterwards. Our Hove branch is offering 50% off joining fee plus an additional 20% if you decide within your free week so if you like it it's worth haggling incase they can do a similar deal for you too. The worse they can say is no. Good luck! It's great fun :j if I wasn't a member of staff I would definately be a member.

This thread makes me soooo grateful for my £70 a year membership at my Uni gym. Can't bear the thought of paying some of the prices mentioned here. :(

  • eklynne,
I noticed you're also from Glasgow (seems there's a few of us on here!) What uni gym are you a member of if you don't mind me asking? I'm a post-grad student at Strathclyde and considered going to the gym there but have heard that it's full of young, very fit people which is slightly intimidating and also the reason I avoided becoming a member of the Glasgow Uni gym as an undergrad. Admittedly though, the prices are tempting, especially when I was considering paying over half that price for only one month's membership. What do you think of your uni's gym?
    Thanks x

I used to be a member of Glasgow Uni gym (yyeeaarrss ago), but seeing as the main reason I like to go to the gym is a good steam and sauna, it was no good for me!
