I noticed you're also from Glasgow (seems there's a few of us on here!) What uni gym are you a member of if you don't mind me asking? I'm a post-grad student at Strathclyde and considered going to the gym there but have heard that it's full of young, very fit people which is slightly intimidating and also the reason I avoided becoming a member of the Glasgow Uni gym as an undergrad. Admittedly though, the prices are tempting, especially when I was considering paying over half that price for only one month's membership. What do you think of your uni's gym?
Thanks x
my mums and her hubby are members of the gym at Cally and their no young or fit lol:oIn 2009 i finally gave up smoking Have been smoke free for 3 years!!!!!!

I am currently an undergrad at Strathy
Strathy's gym is great, and no, it's not full of young fitties at all. I am a very well proportioned 36 year old mother and I feel very comfortable there. It can get quite busy so I tend to go early in the morning. It's very well equipped and there is a pool in the Royal College building you can use too. I often see lecturers in there too and the staff are really nice and friendly.
The spin class is amazing and the girl who takes it is a good size 18, and a total inspiration!
I'd say go for it, but I'm a bit of a Strathy cheerleader, love the place!Come ride with me, through the veins of history...

Wow! That's really reassuring, thank you! Do you ever have to wait for machines? I think I'd be going mid-morning or around midday. I think the spin class sounds great and I'm so glad it's not full of skinnies! Yes, I'm a fan of Strathclyde uni too, I'm at the Jordanhill Campus but just found out I'm entitled to the same discount as other students in the main gym. Maybe I should take advantage of it...0

I rarely wait for machines, but as I say I go early. When I leave about 11 it is starting to get busier but I've never seen it mobbed. My pal goes at night and she says it can get a bit rammed then. You can always go for an induction first to see if it's for you.Come ride with me, through the veins of history...

Thanks for the advice! Just worked out the it would cost me £240 at Greens for the next few months compared to £70 at the uni. Greens was really quiet when I went for the induction which is very tempting, but possibly not worth the steep difference in price. Hmm..it's a thinker...0

Hi all,
After visiting my local Greens gym last week for a look around, I got a text yesterday from them saying 'only a few more places left to get 6 weeks free, a free personal training session and no joining fee' and basically telling me to hurry up if I wanted to join. I was planning on joining this gym as it's lovely and the closest one to me, but not until March when my exams finish and I have more time. Do you think I should just go for it so I can make the most of this offer? Or will it still be there at the end of next month and they're just telling me to join now because they're short on sales?
Also, the girl said although it's a 12 month contract, I could cancel by saying I'm moving away (which I am in September, to Wales) and there would be no problem. Is this true or will I get to September, try to cancel my membership and be told by another sales advisor that I signed up for 12 months? Quite wary as I've had a lot of cr*p from Fitness First in the past with direct debits, baliffs etc. and don't fancy repeating the experience!
Thanks guys xxx0 -

I would make sure you get it in writing that you can cancel just by moving away as alot of places charge you a cancellation charge, how much usually depends on how long you have left of the contract:oIn 2009 i finally gave up smoking Have been smoke free for 3 years!!!!!!

do i have to pretend that i want to join the gym??
i've done this before and i always have to listen to 20 mins of membership deals, x pounds for this deal y pounds for that, i actually cant afford to join a gym.
can i just say 'spare me the chat, wheres the steam room'?
