  • Last night did a gammon and tonight I want to cook butter beans from dried - does anyone have any suggestions please? Was thinking of soaking them overnight, changing the water then getting them going from cold tomorrow. Has anyone tried this? I think I've seen a post somewhere for chickpeas done in a similar way.
  • Not used my slow cooker for a bit, but today coooking away (and smelling lovely)....
    carrots,
    leek,
    parsnip,
    onion
    Stewing beef
    packet casserole mix!

put on low at 9.30am to eat about 6pm. Hopefully will be ok.

I always make curry/stews/mush in my slowcooker and make sure there's plenty of liquid so that nothing cna touch the side too much and burn. This might be a silly question... but do you have to cover it all in liquid? I mean, would vegetables cook without a runny sauce? What would happen? Does anyone have any example of non-mushy foods (except whole chicken) that can be cooked in a slow cooker?

    Thank yooou. :)

I finally took the plunge today and did a whole chicken in the SC, which I placed on a few halved shallots to keep it off the bottom and poured in a little leftover rose. The result was really good, I'm pleased I tried that out now. I served the chicken on a bed of rice, with Turkish style walnut sauce from our endless supply of walnuts, and a garlicky salad of green beans (home grown, from the freezer). It was a lovely meal. And I have plenty chicken left over, which will probably become chicken & mushroom quiche tomorrow, if I end up going to the shops.

Hungarian goulash with caraway seed dumplings.....delicious.

Quick update....there was enough meat left over to freeze for 2 more meals and the sauce which was left I have added a little more stock with some lentils and this 'soup' is slow cooking as I speak.
  • I also just prepared mine for tomorrow, chicken & mushroom casserole ;)

New recipe from a book I've just bought " slow cooking properly explained" by Dianne Page. Hope it's as good as it sounds.
