This thread is making me so hungry! I bought my slow cooker a few months ago for my student house and will be trying out all sorts of recipes in the autumn. :D

    Why wait until the autumn?
  • Silverside of beef (£20 piece for £4.15 which I grabbed and froze- very MSE). Had friends for lunch, everyone was amazed at how tender it was!

    Hi all

I am using my slow cooker for the first time this evening. I am cooking a beef stew on high but the liquid is bubbling a bit causing the lid to move up and down and there are splashes of water around the pot, is this normal?
    Thanks.

    Yes,absolutely.This is quite normal.

You have to be careful not to fill up the SC too much ie doubling the quantities, because you will get dribbling down the sides between the ceramic pot and the metal sides.I've made this mistake in the past. Not a good idea!

Thanks for the reply. There is hardly anything in it, just some steak pieces, a few veg and about a pint of stock. Now the worktop is quite wet, I couldn't imagine leaving the sc on while I was at work, it looks a bit dangerous!

Duck crown, with white wine, squeeze of lemon, allspice, garlic, onion, tomato, seasalt, and black pepper earlier.

Now the bones/leftovers, an onion, and some water for stock.

It doesn't seem like a lot of liquid to be splashing like that.

What is the capacity of your SC?

Mine is 3 litres and I wouldn't usually have it any more than half full.

I get this sometimes with my cheap and cheerful slow cooker. It's usually because cheaper ones don't have a very flat rim where the lid sits, so there are some areas where the gap between lid and rim is slightly more than it should be - and this allows the spitting.

The remedy is to move the lid about (just slide it around) until you find a place where the spitting stops. IF it can be stopped.
