  • I only got my slow cooker at Christmas, and so far have cooked two beef casseroles (which were yummy). I grabbed one of these in Sainsbury's from the reduced shelf as thought I could do something nice with it in the slow cooker, but I have no idea what:

It's 'half a chicken' and weighs 560g. It's currently sat in the freezer as I've only ever bought chicken breasts so consequently have no idea what to do with all these other 'bits' and where the edible stuff will be :o

Would there be enough meat on that for 2 servings on day one (say just cooked plain-ish) and extra for curry/pie another day?

    Thank you!
  • In mine today:

Chicken thighs, carrots, onion, mushrooms, herbs, chicken stock and a large tin of el cheapo condensed chicken soup! Gonna chuck in some green beans a little later too.

Probably serving it with rice for dinner tonight but haven't made my mind up yet.

Yesterday - a boned and rolled leg of pork - previous attempts at slow cooking joints hadn't been very succesful (apart from Brisket) but this was yummy and from now on the only way to cook pork. I think in the past I've used too much liquid. I also stripped the skin off when it was cooked and blasted it in the oven for the crackling.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Left over bits and bobs in mine, a couple of sausages that never got eaten, a chicken fillet, a handful of new potatoes and a few baby carrots. Liquid is water with a chicken oxo, dried garlic and black pepper.
  • I've got a ham shank with onion and carrots. Its filled with water with a stock cube, oregano, bays leaves and a good grinding of black pepper. I love the stock this makes and will use it to make a soup or rissotto.
  • A couple of days ago I did Rabbit in mine. (cost nothing as my foster dog got hold of one of my pets:( but I made sure it didn't go to waste;))
Due to the rabbit being a 'domestic' rabbit rather than a wild one there was loads of meat. After cooking it in the slow cooker for several hours and picking the bones out, (slow cookers are a god send for there abillity to cook things so they fall to bits, which is a good thing.) I did a stir fry, then later had a sandwich, then sat picking & nibbling on bits, then ended up giving the rest to my dog (not the bunny killing foster dog) Because it was a domestic rabbit it wasn't gamey, tasted like chicken.
I wouldn't have risked cooking it (or any meat) in a conventional oven 'cos I'm frightend of giving myself food poisoning.
It's better to be late in this world than early in the next! :A

Wow! I like to thing of myself as being a money saver, but just thinking about eating my pets makes me feel squirmy. They're like my furry little children. Lol.
Maybe I'm just over sensitive !!
