In my slow cooker today.... part 2

Bought a SC today and am keen to try it out. I'd like to make a stew. I have beef, carrots, swede, parsnip, potato, onion, stock cubes, dried mixed herbs.
Will that make a decent stew? We have a 6.5 litre SC and are a family of four. Could you please give me some idea of how much of each ingredient I would need to ues? I'm happy to have some left over for lunch the following day for me and dh (children will be at school). Could I also ask how much stock I would need to use and how many stock cubes?
I would also like to to try to cook a whole chicken in the SC at some point. Please could I ask how much liquid I should put in with it and when I should add other ingredients to flavour the chicken?
Sorry to sound so thick and ask so many questions. I just have no idea how to use the SC and the recipe book/instructions didn't really enlighten me.
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give. x0 -
I have thrown a mix of leftovers in mine - 1 pack of M&S meatballs, an onion, some chopped mushrooms, 3 grated carrots, jar of passata, tin of chopped tomatoes, beef stock cube, mixed herbs and sprinkle of chilli flakes - will see how it trns out!!!;)
To the previous poster - sorry cant help on quantities as I just throw everything in, but the beef stew contents sound fine, I generally use up what ever is lying around so if there are 4 carrots will stick them in, but if I only have 2 left then thats all that goes in. I would say do 2 of each veg chopped up ( I just fill the thing up with anything that is there!;)), I go with 2 stock cubes but am sure you would only need one ( I buy the rubbish 10p sainsbury's own brand) and then I just top up with enough water to about 3/4 of the SC - lots of juices come out so find it is too runny if I put any more in, but you can always thicken with stock.
need to know about liquid for chicken myself as have never done one and am hoping to get one in the M&S meat deal this week;)0 -
I have a 6.5l sc and have a family of 5 to feed, have had beef stew tonight and we have left overs too.
I used a pound of stewing steak, 4/5 carrots, 4/5 parsnips, half a swede, 1 /2 onions only 1 if using a leek, half a head of celery, 4/5 pots depending on size, good handful of frozen peas and sweetcorn, 2 knorr stock pots with 2 pints of water, a bouquet garni, good glug of worcester sauce and a table spoon of red sauce.
There will be enough of this left to feed us again but will freeze it for a later date.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

I bought the 6.5l Rachel Allan SC from Argos last week, and have filled it for the first time this evening. Will switch it on tomorrow morning before I leave for work, and with a bit of luck will have a beef stew waiting for me in the evening.
Mind you, this SC is huge, and takes some filling!! Have used beef, onions, carrots, parsnips, swede, potatoes, garlic, beef stock and red wine.
Looking at everyone's recipes with great interest, as I have to keep using this to prove to my DH that it was worth buying, and will not just sit in the kitchen taking up space!!0 -

The beef stew sounds perfect - I would probably use 2 oxo's and about 1 litre of water, start of by rolling the beef in flour to start the thickening process.
For the whole chicken I just put the chicken in with about 1 inch of hot water and put some butter on the breast and then squirt all over with some lemon juice, turn on high for about 1 hour and then low for about 6 ish hours - is delicious and moist and lasts forever.Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.0 -
I've set up a lamb stew in mine to cook tomorrow. I've added cumin, ginger, garlic, tomato and chopped apricot to hopefully make it a little Moroccan.0
