Just a quick one ... this is proving to be a hugely expensive week for me ... building insurance renewals, necessary purchases and this is a time of year I always go clothes shopping for me ... I know I shouldn't but I need to wear something
. Personally I am not counting savings I make from getting things at discounted prices in this challenge, as I already would be doing it in normal life but anyone who is not looking for every way to save money on outgoings needs to redouble their efforts as it is amazing what you can achieve. I have been haggling as an Olympic sport, playing one shop off against another and (with plenty of smiles and humour) been making cheeky offers all week. Some times you are laughed out of the shop and other times you save a small fortune. The art of haggling is sadly a dieing art in this country and in many shops they look like they have no clue what you are talking about when you start making them offers but please persist as there are savings to be made, especially in this market.
One thing that did amaze me this year was the main department sales were really poor compared to other years with poor discounts and no haggle flexibility ... I think this has much to do with them under ordering this year with the recession (I have failed to find a number of things in store in main sizes early in the season due to low stock levels) but many other stores are desperate to shift stock and get cash flowing.
Without counting ebay and other second hand clothes purchases (a very good way to save money if you buy the right thing) I have "saved" over £1,200 in the last week through shopping around and a bit (lot) of bartering. To me this still sits in the cost side of life as I spent money and if I had bought nothing I would be financially better off, but if you have to buy something get it at the keenest price you can.
Don't forget to go through a cashback site for those insurance renewals0 -
how are people on here still winning with bb?0

Don't forget to go through a cashback site for those insurance renewals
Thanks ... I ended up going for one with no cashback as it still came back way cheaper than those with cashback (if that makes sense). The main one ended up with the same supplier but they could not match the online quote in retentions so I had to cancel and buy a new policy (same cover, few exras etc.) and saved £240 compared to the renewal (i.e. if I had forgotten about it and let it automatically renew). The funny thing is that the renewal quote had a no claims percentage included but was twice the price I bought the same policy for in the end
. It is like they try to lose the business ... their renewal quote made me look at all of their competitors and if I could have done better with cahback etc. I would have been off. I suppose all too many people just let it renew and pay a fortune more than they need to and the insurance companies keep playing on it.

Just checked my ebay listings and I have 2 items with bids on for £14.00 each, yay! :T
Have just been on a training day for Usborne (am I allowed to say their name here?) and got loads of ideas now for getting my sales going there. Just need to not be scared to pick up the phone and make those appointments.
Must admit, I'm in a bit of a quandry at the moment with work (or lack of) and things - not sure quite where to put my priorities for the time being.0 -

A few people have mentioned Quidco and Ebay but I was just wondering how this tracks. Does anyone have experience with it? ... do you need to clear cookies, log on with Quidco, log on with ebay etc each time you bid on something or does it track all purchases within an ebay sesion? For instance, last night I won 3 auctions all within 10 minutes of each other ... if I had to go through the process each time I would have likely missed at least one of them."I hear and I forget. I have used it quite a lot and find that as long as I BID and PAY when going through quidco / topcash back then it tracks fine. I don't tend to buy from more than one seller at a time and pay though sorry.0

Thanks. I suppose even if it only tracks for one it would still be a saving. I am looking at a couple of things tonight so I will see how it works. Do you usually go through Quidco just as you are about to bid or can you be on a little while in advance? ... I usually have at least one ebay tab on the go, usually more
. I suppose trial and error will tell me in the end ...

Think it is 40% of final value fees. ie I got something for 99p and got 4p.
