Complaint Letter Successes

I live very rurally so do most of my shopping online or by catalogue - I only go into town every few months and do not intend to spend half the cost of the item travelling to return it.
I got an email from them this morning with a free post address on it for the item to be returned. I will post it to them and then see what happens. The problem is that the problem isnt a manufacturers fault (eg not bad stitching) but more to do with the cotton that the shorts are made from. I have a feeling that they will try and get out of it.
The other issue is that the other pair of shorts havent been worn yet but as they are the same material, surely they will develop the same problem when they are worn. And I really need shorts for the gym. I have been looking online for ages and I am not a size that you can just walk into any high street shop and buy.

Wanted to start a post where peeps could share their experiences of writing complaint letters & whether they got any result (and more importantly any free stuff!)
Am a bit of a one for writing letters myself but have had mixed results. It seems some companies are only to keen to dosh out freebies whilst others, even when you have a really serious geniune complaint are downright mean.
Doesn't have to be complaint letters either, many companies give away free samples if you write and ask, particularly if you say something nice about them!
Looking forward to reading your stories....
Three years ago I had to send my laptop in for repairs, under warranty. I was quoted a 2 week max. turnaround but it took 5 weeks. I wrote a letter saying I was not satisfied with the service. They sent me £30 dixons vouchers - I spent them on GTA Vice City! Result! No Unapproved or Personal links in signatures please - FT30 -
NoHiya.
We had a utter nightmare with B&Q buying a kitchen, took over a year to sort out. Wrong parts, marked doors, wrong size units....
I think we wrote to the customer services manager of the store we bought from and they have offered us compensation of £250 after court threats, which we would have gone through with.0 -
NoI am sorry if this seems a stupid question but I'm not sure. Recieved a postal order cheque for £4 from one company I complained to and was just wondering whether I have to pay this in at the Post Office or can I use it in shops?0
