I have to agree with others....I have seen a cannabis farm in a house (ooohh...god bless the 90's!;)) and it sounds EXACTLY like the set up....no snow on the roof would indicate that there is massive amounts of heat coming from the attic area...which is where most farms are done.

You also find that most dealers are not willing to pay for their own electricity so usually get it connected to someone else's supply.

You need to get the police onto this. You could do it anon on Crimestoppers...

It's nothing to do with personal views on drugs yaka yaka....your home could be at risk if the place goes up (but you won't mind - you'll be down the 24/7 garage getting the munchies in!!!:D)

Better to be safe than sorry surely?

    Good luck

Been having similar problems with MIL's neighbour, banging at later hours never comes out the house. Noises from the loft.

Im going to ask her to look at the roof for snow tomorrow. . . . .

and once there was a massive explosion in the middle of the night, our house actually shook with the force as did our other neighbours and half the street was out as we actually thought it was bomb at first. All the men from the neighbourhood went round to their house to ask what the hell had happened - and they never answered the door, they also refused to open the door to the police and the police didn't have a search warrant

This is the bit that would worry me. Strange men lurking around, noises in the middle of the night... and an explosion

Whats your location, OP, near London?

Everyones imaginations may have got away with them but My first thought would be to contact environmental health and say your worried about the noise and wondering if there running some sort of business and see what they say.

Also the 2 European men (how do you know there European? Just wondered) the summer house will not be legal as a full time dwelling without planning permission. So if you really think they are living there full time it may be worth contacting the council planning department

Id say it sounds most definitely like a cannabis farm (take it from somebody who's dabbled in these things on a small scale for personal medical reasons of course ;) )

It wouldn't do any good having a smell around their back yard, with the type of equipment used now (ozone cleaners, carbon filters etc) theres next to no odors

Those hydroponic lights make hell of a racket, plus with the fans and ventilation going it would sound like sawing and drilling etc

No snow on the roof, blacked out windows, steam from a vent, people living in the summerhouse, all activity at night, ah those were the days :o

Id get on to your local plod in the morning.

heres a news story from the bbc a couple of days ago http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/leicestershire/8447110.stm

    edit.
just read you comment about the explosion, could be a meth lab as well

The No snow on the roof issue could purely be down to poor insulation and the house losing heat through the roof as it hasnt been insulated.

I was driving thrugh town yesterday and was looking at all the roofs as some had a thick cover of snow and others were totally clear.

This was in the posh end of town. I assumed that some had their heating on full whack but no insulation in the loft or there house was facing what little sun we had and it had melted.

I have also lived close to a cannabis farm, very recently in fact.

My son was waking up saying he could smell a strange smell. He was sleeping in the attic room and it had a velux window that was always slightly open in summer otherwise he would have been cooked in his sleep.

    I could never smell anything.

We were always popping our head out of the velux and having a good look around and noticed that the next building along (not attached to ours as there was a 10 foot wide footpath between) had a plume of smoke coming out of a strange place in the roof. Now i know the next building was council flats and they didnt have combi boilers as they were all on storage heaters. I spoke to my mum and a few neighbours and they suggested a possible cannabis farm.

I then spoke to a few of the neighbours and yes there were drug dealers living there as well as a couple of heroin addicts. Few days later police raid their flat again (apparantly it was a regular occurance and discover a cannabis farm. Not a very big one, but big enough to fill the 1 and only bedroom in the flat.

Needless to say we have since moved.

Its amazing what we DONT notice about our neighbours until its been spelt out to us. We didnt ever see any of the people living in the flat as there properties faced the opposite direction to ours so we only ever saw the side wall if we were standing outside. We couldnt see anything from inside the house as our side wall had no windows. We wouldnt have even noticed the smoke if we didnt have the velux window to nosey out of.

  • Hi all, lots of replies over night. Thanks, interesting about the party wall act not applying retrospectively!

    1) The European Men - one is Italian (I overheard him on his mobile in the yard wishing his family Merry Christmas etc " Mama, Buon Natale"), the other, I haven't got a clue, maybe Hungarian? I very much doubt that them living there is declared or above board. They are about 40 years old so no chance of it being some sort of a student exchange.

    2) We are in the North West, there have never been any terrorist raids in this area and it is mainly pensioners, young families round here, quite a nice area although that means nothing these days. I'm not saying that anyone was implying that all foreign people are strange or possible terrorists but I like to keep an open mind as we ourselves are a multi cultural family - my Dad is a foreign man who only gets up at night (he has worked nights for nearly 40 years since the NHS invited him to come and work in the UK in the 1970's), he's a liberal peaceable muslim and he is definitely not a terrorist (but he is bloody terrified of them himself)! Equally, I'm not saying that our white 50 something Dingle like hillybilly neighbours couldn't be terrorists but in terms of the 2 foreign men, I'd rather not think foreign=strange. But I like the vampire line of enquiry....sexy... :p Also, the bomb like noise was around 5 years ago. At the time, we saw it as a threat. We thought it might have been a petrol bomb and they were saying, you mess with us, you get one of these through your door. We had been having problems with them alot at this time. Police did nothing. But the Meth Lab thing is interesting. The two men in the summerhouse arrived around 2 years/ a year and a half ago.

    3) The funnel? Not for a combi boiler or drier as we have both ourselves. Also, it has not always been there and they rarely have anyone round so we would see a gas engineer or fitter. It is very RANDOM. That is the only way I can put it. It doesn't look like it was put there professionally.

It is very quiet there at the moment - no noises there at all last night, also the two men have disappeared (quiet=no men?). I am watching to see if the curtains are ever open (net curtains with thick lined curtains drawn over the top) and also to see if the lights are ever on. So far, its a no to both. The man and wife are definitely in as the garage keeps getting open and shut and the car is in the drive. The Dog is getting walked each day around 5am. I am being more vigilant and needless to say, Crimestoppers may very well be getting a call. Its very interesting that its all gone quiet since we have had a lot of police patroling the area. There was a Police Van parked on the path outside the house two nights running, then the two men disappeared. Maybe the neighbours on the other side are more savvy! Thanks all!

MI, I think you have been very patient with this family, not sure I could have been! I do think 'something' is going on, it all sound very very strange. It could be the Police are already aware of something?

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!

You could always speak to the neighbours on the other side see what problems they have had.
