erm in what way Mugwumps. As I dont live in Scotland nor know anyone who lives there nor have any postal contact there. It doesnt affect me.

Nor does a war in Afghanistan as I know nobody in the Forces...

Blueangel we have had no snow here aside from a light dusting on Tuesday evening. We have had 2 to 3 days now of gradually warming weather with no overnight freeze or frost and bright strong hot sunshine during the day.Paths are clear. There is no excuse left now for people being unable to get to work.

My point re the Wright Stuff is that it does confirm the experiences of real people and yes it does remind us that there are some people out there still wanting to carry on normal lives eg callers who wanted their kids to go to school or to go to work and their workplaces and schools closed unnecessarily. Yes the BBC news shows bad weather in places but as another poster on here said it is NOT everywhere which is the implication. Were I to rigidly stick to what the BBC was telling me about our area, I would be believing had 7-8 inches of snow on Tuesday and been totally freezing yesterday instead of warmer temperatures and a light dusting which of course does not make a news story..

Yes we do have other ways of contacting people such as emails and phones but that doesnt really have any bearing on any postal deliveries which is the contact in question. If waiting for rental dvds (me)and confirmation letters from Govt and council depts (flatmate) emails and phones dont come into it.

As I said I remain in deep admiration of dedicated posties and other workers who prove what this country should really be about.

You don't get it now and I suspect you never will
Your comments are ignorant as I suspect are you

On one hand they are skiving lazy no goods etc.. now suddenly they are pillars of society that you have deep admiration for make you bloody mind up or just stick to your knitting you daft old bint

Our walking postie has been coming every day and all credit to him.:T

The royal mail van won't come up our road though (very flat, two minutes off the main road) so I ring the sorting office to see if they have the recorded delivery parcel I've been waiting two weeks for. They do, but I can't collect it without one those 'we tried to deliver' cards (strict rule, asked to speak to a manager as well, but no joy) and I'm not going to get one of those (or my parcel) as the van won't come up the road.

It's silly catch 22 situations like these that give Royal Mail it's bad reputation.

did you have ID and proof of address?
  • We've had a few bits and pieces of mail, to be honest I'm not that bothered as our estate roads aren't particularly passable at the moment, so I don't blame the postie for not being able to negotiate them either walking or driving, even if he/she did have something to deliver.

It won't last forever and I can wait for my junk mail! I'm sure that like the rest of us they're doing their job as best they can in circumstances we're not used to here.

Still no post here. Went to the sorting office and picked it up myself instead.

No sign of the binmen either.

  • No post here since monday, AT ALL though they are delivering in the next street away and people there have had post every day this week. I live in Wombwell near Barnsley.

I am waiting on a Parcel from the TUCCI store, one from Play.com, one from Amazon.co.uk, one from Jeanstore also phone bills and bank statements which normally arrive in the first week of January.

Pretty poor service to be honest, I appreciate the snow will disrupt things but this street is no worse than the one they are delivering mail on. I suspect there is some kind of health and safety in place that only allows postal workers to walk 'so far' on foot.

What they should have done is been a bit more organised and allocated different streets to different days to make it fair, instead they are going to have things piling up at the sorting office. I am not doing there job for them, ringing up to check if they have anything for me and going to collect mail. If anything gets returned to sender I will be requesting compensation.

You'd think they'd have better procedures in place for bad weather!.

Couldn't you be a little more helpful and go to the sorting office to pick up your mail? Yes, it is inconvenient but we should all be pulling together while the country is suffering from the icy grip. OK your street might not be bad but maybe your particular postie can't get into work? Come on where is your community spirit? As for compensation I don't think you'll get far on that one.

Well they've actually delivered the outstanding 'letter' mail today after people complained. I never had an issue with things taking time to get delivered however its the complete silence and confusion over the whole situation, the sorting offices should all of a section on the Royal Mail website where they can keep customers updated on disruption.

The sorting office is 3 miles away, if it was walking distance I would have gone on foot to collect the mail. However it is not safe for everybody to be getting their cars out and going to pick up letters as all though the roads aren't terrible they aren't great and cars skidding about is going to make matters worse.

I still do not know where my parcels are, I know at least one of them has been sent via royal mail but not the others. I have better things to be doing with my time than chasing these up. I said I will seek compensation if these items get 'returned to sender', I am not paying postage twice that is a fact and it would be just like them to send items back to the sender rather than even TRY to get it to its destination. Quite simply when they sorted the mail for delivery they could have put a note in with the letters (possibly a call for collection/redelivery card) advising that there are parcels waiting that you need to make arrangements for.

All this said, this is not the first time that this country has had bad weather with ice and snow and companies like Royal Mail should be better organised for it.

As for community spirit, I have helped push 4 people get their cars back in around my village this week. One of which had just been returned from the garage and the owner thought it would be a good idea to go up and down the street in it for a test drive rather than waiting until the snow had melted and surprise surprise it got stuck.

It is this type of Idiocy I have no time for. Same as people thinking it was clever to be out shovelling snow up in piles the last couple of days when its forcast winds for the weekend and into next week which is just going to blow it back into the road. In difficult situations, a little common sense is all that's required!.

really, and no other organisations/companies have struggled?
what would RM have? a regiment of back up staff and snow ploughs?
im not commenting on your specific issues but have you missed the constant staff cuts year on year?
perhaps people will start to realise that these actually have an effect and are not some phantom bodies that just disappear without any change to the service
as for seeking compensation, good luck on that
so far you have decided these items will be returned.i dont know why but i am sure you have some concept going on
glad to see its fine for RM staff to be out and about but for actual human beings its a bit dangerous...

We have a short wearing postie too but not this week (he must be a southern softie LOL) we have had loads of snow and it's still hanging around but we have had a post deivery every day, it was 4pm one day but we got it eventually. I think they have done really well as it's been dreadful walking on frozen pavements.
