I am right in thinking i can t apply for this aren t I.My husband works full time but only earns about 12,500. As he is self employed and there hasn t been as much work. I am not working at the moment. But as he works full time we get 19 pound a week WTC. So we don t get free school meals. Which with 3 children would cost us 30. BUt anyway as we get WTC we would be able to get this, is this right

You need child tax credit rather than working tax credit, unfortunately.
    So you are correct.

Sorry - I've just read it (properly this time!) - it's Open Office.

Hi there people, I'm a journalist for the BBC in Newcastle (and a personal fan of moneysavingexpert!) and we're doing a piece on radio tomorrow about free laptops being given to people on jobseekers allowance or families on low income.

Is anyone in the forum from the North East and would like to take part? If so, message me back and I'll give you my number cos it'd be great to talk to you.

Do you think it's fair that other hard-working people aren't entitled to free laptops?

Would you not be able to afford one for your kids if you didn't get the free laptop?

    Cheers

Even though in NW I do very much agree with the above, upto last year I was working and felt very penalised, Ihad to stop due to illness but it was a toss up at one point in well carry on and maybe make myself even iller (as I loved the job) or stop and recover at my pace - this was decided after a visit to the cab who showed me I was only better off by £10 per week working!!! This didn't include things like the school meals, healthy start vouchers etc so I do think that working people should be entitled and have more encouragment visited collegues last week and like they said you get f all when you work. My income was less than the £15,000, 4 kids and husband so shouldn't been eligible for alot of the things but weren't as was working.

Been reading thru this thread and saw there is lots of very good advice. I got my entitlement letter today and was directed to an Acer laptop in Comet. I have heard some peeps say Acer is not a very good make is this right and also does everyone here recommend the Samsung r519? Ijust want to make the right choice for the kids. TIA. :)

Thankyou to Lorweld for posting this I would never have known. :T
Big thanks to all who contribute to the forums. Be lucky everyone and be safe!

The Acer at Comet is about the most cheap and chatty laptop you are likely to find on the scheme. Most people are going for the Samsung R519 or the Toshiba L450, both seem to be as good as each other and the best on the scheme. Many are upgrading to 2gb when purchasing them, some doing so for free and others paying £30, depending on where you shop (online).
