i think this is a fantastic offer for ppl who really need it. i could claim this for my sons but we have a pc already so am going to miss on it and give someone else a chance. i really cant believe you just said this

I must admit I thought she sounded a tad ungrateful too!

Maybe she should write to the powers that be and request a better package...?

I think it is a perfectly reasonable thing to say.
Yes it is free, but you can still buy wisely.
You obviously want the best system you can get, but the suppliers are applying a fairly hefty mark-up (check out the price of the Netbook versus what you can buy one for on the open market) and the specs are very last year (the current R519 you buy off the shelf has 3GB memory and a 250GB hard drive).
In particular, the 1GB memory is a bit of a sticking point, and some here are opting to upgrade on making their purchase.
The question is: Is the system spec set in stone, and if so will it never be upgraded (within the lifetime of the current offer)?
I think that it is and it won't.
Now as far as I can see, nobody is complaining about it, or being ungrateful, rather they are just asking for advice in looking for the best use of the grant.
    That's just sensible, IMHO.
But, as has been said, it is FREE, after all!

As above you want your "free money" to go a far as possible, wouldn't be on this site otherwise ;)
  • I got my acceptance letter 2 days before getting my Child Benefit letter back, Just waiting for card and pin now, Sounds stupid but before I lost my job I had less money than i do now, Loved working that time away from the home but now, as silly as it sounds, I cant afford to go back to work, Im £40 a week worse off doing 16-20 hours a week or so the calculations of the lone parent advisor said thats not including things like free school meals and freebies like this! I feel for people srtuggling tryin to work.

There is always the option of upgrading it later, once the warranty is out.

As far as I can see, 1GB is fine, and I've been using it for uni so have had several different things going on at once with no problems.

DD seems to have no problems with playing games either.

I'm happy to wait and upgrade later if necessary. Windows 7 certainly seems less greedy that Vista, as far as I can tell anyway.

The problem with waiting is there are only so many to go round so you may lose out altogether.

Or do you already have the grant? If so, I imagine it is already allocated and you can't lose it iyswim....

To explain my response to your original question:

most of the people wanting a laptop will need one asap as they currently can't get online, so your willingness to wait seems to suggest no real need for a laptop iyswim? I think that's what made me feel you were being a bit ungrateful.
