School closures are snow joke

I did a post a bit like this last time we had snow. But it was about why not do like America does and if they have to close for snow they take it off the next holiday coming up.
Got more or less the same narrow minded teachers are gods we should all bow down to them....
If everything else is open and the just the schools are closed why do you not expect people to get annoyed.
I worked in a department store and when we had snow that closed the local schools we still had teachers in shopping. I saw quite a few of my old school teachers in. So how can they make it into the city to shop but its far to dangerous to teach.
But I am sure I will get flamed again for this.
Also I am not sure if anyone uses facebook and has teachers on their friends list then I am sure they will see loads of updates saying:
"I hope it snows I want a day off"
"Oh yes school is closed day off yipee"
Stuff like that, I see those updates on facebook a lot when there is a little bit of snow about.JeremyMarried 9th May 20090 -

Unfortunately you seem to have the impression that it is up to individual teachers to decide whether we go into work or not. That is simply not the case - we get a phone call/text saying that the school is closed. In the last snow I made it into school on the second day of closure, only to find that the doors were locked!
So if you see some teachers in town, then you are right - they probably could have made it into school. However, don't blame them as individuals.0 -
yes it is annoying at the first flake of snow britain seems to come to a stand still.
(especially where i live as we rarely ever get snow!)
woke up this morning to about an inch of snow, and found out that my daughter's school is closed. No biggie, yes i understand that some people do work and use the time when they are at school to work as I do, hubby works full time and me part-time. But most people (iirc possibly by law??) who are employed parents can take something called ''parental leave'' which is leave in case of family difficulties / emergencies ie no baby sitters etc, granted it is unpaid but these things happen!
the company i work for has sent everyone who went into work home early as they are concerned for the welfare of staff returning home. They have also said that if they are late in,and / or have to leave early than they will be paid for the full day as normal. I'm on annual leave this week, i definately picked that wrong didnt i!:rotfl:
i can understand the headmasters closing the schools, they have to think of the safety of staff (and children, especially with this stupid compensation culture thing we have here) some teachers don't live so close to schools so if they kept the school open with say 5 teachers for the whole school would you honestly say that would be enough to look after a whole primary?? stretching teachers than thinly is when problems/accidents occur. Can you see the mountains through the fog?0 -
Hi folks,
I'm lucky enough to live in an area that seems to have been spared the worst of the wintery weather over the last couple of days. Yesterday we had one heavy snow shower which lasted about an hour. The snow started to thaw pretty much instantly and although there is still some snow about the main roads etc are all perfectly clear. In fact in Colwyn Bay, where I am at present, not only is there no snow whatsoever but a lot of the roads and pavements are now completely bone dry. According to my car the temperature outside is currently +2c so it's above freezing.
So why is that my daughter's school which is about three or four miles from here is closed today? We listened to list of school closures on the local radio station and checked the BBC website this morning and her school wasn't on the list of closures. However when my wife went to drop daughter off on her way to work she found that was in fact closed. As we both work full time we have now been left with a big problem and have been given no warning to prepare for this. Had the weather been bad then we would have feared the worst but given that there's very little snow, all the main roads are clear, etc we had no reason to expect that there'd be a problem.
Apparently the closure is due to ice outside the school! Surely someone must have the wit and wisdom to get a bit of grit, clear the ice and get the kids into the building. Once they're safely inside then keep them indoors. It's not rocket science.
It seems that yet again the teachers are taking advantage of the slightest excuse to have a skive. No consideration for the parents who have jobs of their own who will now probably lose a day's pay through no fault of their own. Bet the teachers will still paid though?
I remember a boy at a school I worked in slipped on ice and ended up with a 7 inch gash in his thigh. It was the ice that cut him. He needed allot of stiches and I should imagine he now has a scar for life. After that it was decided the school wasn't safe for the pupils. He was off school for weeks and having treatment for months after.
After seeing that lad being carried by ambulance guys I totally agree the schools closing due to this weather.Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p

Well, my kids are off as well.
I took the day off as well, mainly as I can't get to my customers, went sledging, had a snowball fight, built a snowman, very good day really.
Have to catch up tomorrow. If it's better.0 -

As far as I see it the majority of kids, teachers and ancillary staff actually got to the building and were ready for a normal day only to be turned away because of a short stretch of icy pavement?
Yes the insult was out of order but I do agree the decision was a little senseless don't you think?
the teacher at the gate according to fat andy didnt say it was down to a bit of ice, he said it was and i quote
"When they arrived they were met a teacher who told them the school was closed. When my wife asked why she was told it was because it was too dangerous to get there. "
that could be because of ice, it could also because the school was suffering from a gas leak!Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

had the school of closed in the first place that child would have missed a few days, after that he would have been home for a few weeks and the parents would have also had to take a few weeks offEveryones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

AAAAAAAAARRRGH!!!!!!!!!
If it were up to the teachers to close the school, then yes, I admit - you would be justified.
But it's not. So you're not*.
You just sound silly and jealous - and unable to follow a reasonably simple argument, so probably a bit dull-in-the-noggin, too.
Sort yourself out, please......
*NB - please know that you're not being "flamed", as you put it, for not thinking teachers are gods; you're being "flamed" for not thinking, full stop0 -

I take it that your own school days were NOT the best time of your Life "I hope it snows I want a day off"
"Oh yes school is closed day off yipee"
Not my wife's problem , she is writing reports , her school is not due to start until Monday.
Ps this will start a thread about long hols for Teachers :rotfl:0 -
Our school (primary) stayed open yesterday and today although many others locally were closed. Only half the children came in. I guess the parents thought that the pavements were too dangerous!0
