School closures are snow joke

Hi folks,

I'm lucky enough to live in an area that seems to have been spared the worst of the wintery weather over the last couple of days. Yesterday we had one heavy snow shower which lasted about an hour. The snow started to thaw pretty much instantly and although there is still some snow about the main roads etc are all perfectly clear. In fact in Colwyn Bay, where I am at present, not only is there no snow whatsoever but a lot of the roads and pavements are now completely bone dry. According to my car the temperature outside is currently +2c so it's above freezing.

So why is that my daughter's school which is about three or four miles from here is closed today? We listened to list of school closures on the local radio station and checked the BBC website this morning and her school wasn't on the list of closures. However when my wife went to drop daughter off on her way to work she found that was in fact closed. As we both work full time we have now been left with a big problem and have been given no warning to prepare for this. Had the weather been bad then we would have feared the worst but given that there's very little snow, all the main roads are clear, etc we had no reason to expect that there'd be a problem.

Apparently the closure is due to ice outside the school! Surely someone must have the wit and wisdom to get a bit of grit, clear the ice and get the kids into the building. Once they're safely inside then keep them indoors. It's not rocket science.

It seems that yet again the teachers are taking advantage of the slightest excuse to have a skive. No consideration for the parents who have jobs of their own who will now probably lose a day's pay through no fault of their own. Bet the teachers will still paid though?
The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water

  • How is that the teacher's fault?
It's the Council's responsibility to arrange gritting not the teachers.

Little jimmy goes to school. Little Jimmy slips over. Parents sue because their little darling is injured, has no common sense and it's everyone else's fault.

this is where the H & S has gone mad and the decision to close the school falls to the headmaster so implying the teachers are just skiving when the decision is out of there hands is a bit lame.
Also instead of rushing around to find a childminder or a family/friend to look after your daughter so you could go to work you have spent your time posting a useless post on a forum, i suspect you are the one who is now skiving as you so nicely put it!!
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

I would grit it myself but I've made the effort to get to work to do the job I get paid for.

I accept that the council should send someone to grit the area but I can't accept that a bunch of well trained and well paid teachers can't somehow work out how to transport a couple of hundred kids sixty feet or so between the school gates and the front door of the building. I'm sure most of the parents would happily carry the kids such a short distance in order to avoid losing a days pay.

  • Many teachers travel quite a distance to school, if they can't get in, its not their fault!
  • Seems like the snow has caused problems for all parties

I bet the teachers blame the Parents. The headmasters blame the council...and the Kids hail the snow!

Poor you, or is that lucky you having no snow. Maybe the teachers at your childrens school have lots, they dont live on site you know just so your kids can be taught.
To call teachers skivers is thje lowest form of insult, they work hard educating your kids. Blaim the council if you need to blaim someone. Or is it that your free chld care has hit a problem, teachers are not there so you can go to work. "Not nice being the butt is it".
You should try being a teacher for a couple of months, maybe then you might show a bit of respect. (and no i am not a teacher)
But if you think the free schooling your children recive isnt good enough then do some thing about it, ie pay for private schooling. You are lucky enough to have a choice, many countries dont they have to pay, full stop.

So get working then, because unless your job title is something like "Message-board whinger" or "Mindless teacher-basher with silly axe to grind" you're not actually doing the job you get paid for right now, are you?

    "Skiver" indeed........

I work in a large secondary school and we had a child slip yesterday on the ice (Council has run out grit!) Parents came in to see the Head yesterday afternoon saying they were going to sue! The head has decided to close the school today as the playground is like an ice rink and kids will be kids, most of the teachers are in though and we will spend the day planning, marking etc.
