i agree the school should have made people aware asap without a doubt, but the OP started a thread called "Skiving teachers are snow joke", and that is what has got peoples backs up, you cant just make an accusation and expect everyone to agree, yeah lazy teachers!!

Yes, I agree that was an unfair comment. I would hate to be a teacher for reasons that teachers may love it. However, the original post was obviously written 'in the heat of the moment' so I can sympathise a bit. We've all done this about something I'm sure!

In this day and age, people are concerned for job safety. Some employers are very unsympathetic to time off relating to kids - I know mine are. It's stressful to have to take time off at such short notice and possibly be thought of as a liability!

I have already posted , let the OP take it up with his school

    Will quote
    Give the guy a break.

When he gives the 'break ' to the teachers .

We are going off topic here :D

As stated , husband of a teacher ( one that has taught for over thirty years)

I think ( well I know) that my wife does not need more days wasted on training to
safeguard kids / more ways of teaching sex education / problems with bullying and the latest drug scare..... if she can't teach now , she never will. These days might help the younger staff but my wife has had the practical skills for years. Sitting and listening to a 'so called expert ' half her age , who has not had the experience IS a waste of time.

 Ooohh Wallbash, with respect and without wishing to start a war ;): Training IS important. Age and experience count for so much but things change, develop and move on and noone knows everything...ever. I work in adult education as I said before and its such a shame that the older more experienced staff do sometimes feel that its a waste of thier time when if they just looked at it from a different angle they would hopefully see JUST how important it is.

    1. More experienced staff atending and contributing to training sets a good example both for professional practice and attitude to younger, less experienced staff.

    2. More experienced staff attending and contributing to training enable younger and less experienced staff to learn from their wide and varied experiences. Those experiences that the ""'so called expert ' half her age"" doesn't and can't have as many of them aren 't teachers, they teach their subject matter to a range of professions (i'm thinking things like child protection for example)

    3. Experienced (all) staff who don't attend training are at risk of being deskilled and left behind when new legislation comes along or changes are made or if there is a current hot topic (particular street drug craze, increased rates of underage pregnancy etc)

    4. Ongoing professional develoment is vital to every profession and professional, however long they have been doing the job, or the profession becomes stale and loses credibility.

I know that it must feel like teaching granny to suck eggs (no pun about age intended ;)) but it's so valuable to have experienced staff in training and it saddens me when staff attend who have "been there, done that, bought the Tshirt" and sit in training like they are sucking a lemon because they think they know it all but won't then share with the rest of the group!! (not suggesting your wife does this bit :o)

Just a few thoughts, and a bit OT and not intended to cause offense, just to put across the trainers point of view ;)

I agree, my employer is not too pleased. This time there is no way any school could open here, but the last snow we had the school shut for three days when really it could have been one.
:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:

    No offense taken .

    And yes

quote I know that it must feel like teaching granny to suck eggs (no pun about age intended ;)) but it's so valuable to have experienced staff in training and it saddens me when staff attend who have "been there, done that, bought the Tshirt" and sit in training like they are sucking a lemon because they think they know it all but won't then share with the rest of the group!!

She will be the one at the back ... with her lemons
To many times its going over the same thing .

You admit you are a trainer . I admit to be only married to a lemon :D
But I know ( because she moans of a waste of time , when she could doing something useful)
I think we will have to agree to disagree about some 'training ' days.
  • You can read all the posts, including the OP and agree with certain points in every one (well, maybe all!) - but you can't agree with everything that is said. Similarly - you can't write your opinion here and have everyone agree with what you say - it's kind of impossible. I do however, have a few things to comment on if I may be so bold.

It seems to me, and I'm not a Teacher BTW (quite fancy it actually) - that a lot of the decisions made to close schools are out of the hands of the likes of Headmasters and Teachers and often in the hands of councils, Emergency Services etc. Well, I for one didn't realise that - so a bit more understanding garnered there on my part - all good.

The other thing is it seems that all the reasoning behind closing schools - or anywhere for that matter is down to 'risk'. That risk maybe a pupils parents will sue for slipping, it could be down to no heating in the school - a whole myriad of reasons - all of which are perfectly acceptable. I mean - the last thing we want is someone to be hurt especially our children, and not least our teachers.

But...I find it increasingly difficult to understand these risks sometimes. I mean - when kids are little - they fall over at home, they cut their knee's and fall off ropes from tree's - it happens all over every day. It's sometimes not nice - but life isn't sometimes. I feel that this is the root cause of peoples frustration sometimes, especially parents who have lived through that and 'got on with it' - and of course I cannot accept children knowingly getting hurt etc - but this is what our big bad lives throw at us sometimes - it's not a bad lesson.

Let's rid ourselves of all the 'Blame - Claim' culture. Have teachers making decisions for our children, in their best interests - not the fire brigade, they have there own priorities, or should have (sorry Firefighters). I remember going to school when the heating was broken - you left your coat on and braved it, feeling better for the experience. It was all part of growing up.

I feel like I am going off on a tangent - but if the pupils can get to school and the Teachers can make it - then what on earth should stop the day’s lessons.

Only an opinion - please don't slate me for my comments - they have been made in good faith (I have not yet lost my Christmas Spirit!) I always feel a bit of angst on forums like these. You'll notice I only joined today - I'd rather get round a table with a pint and discuss things the old fashioned way (with the kids firmly tucked up in bed - smile on their faces of course, after spending all day at school throwing snowballs and skidding on the ice)

Now go build a snowman and smile!!

    Have a lovely day!!

the decision to close the school falls to the headmaster, but he/she is advised from the council/fire/police of course of one of those autorities recommend closure he/she will have to follow for various reasons including insurance.

As for knocks and bumps it happens to all children, the problem lies with the 1% of parents who feel they should be compensated for there child having a knock wheter it be at school or in the local park, and due to that 1% it effects the other 99% as most local authorities have to cater to the 1% because they can end up costing them more than the 99% of people who accept accidents happen.
Personally the only reason a school should close is if the teachers cant get in, a gas leak or its on fire lol. A bit of cold weather isnt going to any harm them
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
  • I can't believe how many people have bothered to reply to this idiot!

Basically the school is dangerous, and the OP can't believe they've got to look after the kids for the day, as 'I pay my taxes blah blah blah' 'I'm at work, posting on message boards when I should be working, blah blah blah''

Perhaps they would prefer the school to open and then call the OP saying that said child has slipped on ice, and fractured skull.

I wonder who would be to blame then

'I'd happily carry kid into school..... keep them inside....' what happens if there is a fire?? Everyone out, slip on the ice, break limbs, or stay inside and suffocate.

    Absolute clowns!!

Oh yeah, teachers get ridiculous holidays, and should work when conditions are dangerous, obviously you would, rather than posting your whingeings on message boards when someone is paying your wages.
Just remember, if it wasn't for a teacher somewhere, most folk wouldn't be able to post on this board. Think on....

Well all the schools here where I am are closed - in the whole area and definitely closed tomorrow also.

The nursery I use for my other children, well I am presuming that is closed too as the phone keeps going to voicemail and I think they are taking advantage, all the staff there live very local and within walking distance some of them!!!!

Now I can understand schools closing - but a Nursery? Now I am annoyed at that. If I can go and do my job, so can they. !!!!!
