I'll do the new list shorly.. I just need to brush and dry the pinks who have just got out of the bath.. which has worn me out hugely so I've collapsed for a minute.
I now have a list of new things to squeeze into the lists.. including many new and varied things.. thank you all for your input.
Back in a bit xx
Toots.. I'll be shaking those bees out of your bonnet!! You post whatever you like on your list.. I have some right mad stuff on mine! It is yours and personal. If you want you can send me a copy of the welcome PM and we can go through it and see if anything else could be added/removed to fine tune it? You've not been home long so go have a cuppa and relax and get settled back in and see how things are tomorrow.. you are no doubt stressed and tired and in need of a decent nights sleep! biggest of hugs xxxLB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
We've had a solitary fieldfare move in to the garden this week and it's taken ownership of the pyracantha - I'd never even heard of them before! It's lovely to see him but he's bullying the blackbirds away so I'm a little worried about them now
Where abouts do you live? I'm in North Wales - my Mum is 25 miles away but she's had a little group of six move in this week too. Really hope this cold weather eases off a bit soon
I'm on the South coast of Dorset. I think they are usually around the area but tend to use the green spaces around the county. As those are snowed up, I guess the towns on the coastal strip which are always a bit warmer and less snowy have more available food at this precise time.
As for the blackbirds - can you put some food out for them away from FF's bush so they can eat too?I am the leading lady in the movie of my life

All done please Toots
(I feel like I am shouting, and pushing my luck - which just isn't me)

Second I'm really sorry I didn't reply to your PM. It was a really nice suprise, and the first time I've been welcomed to a thread in such a nice friendly way. Thanks pet thats nice of you to say
If you do revise it, and if it is not too much work, how about breaking it down and sending a bit each day rather than one long message. If you need help I'm sure there are plenty on this thread, including me, who would be willing to help send out PMs.
a) we had 45 new starts this week so I have sent 45 pm's - if I break it down then I would be doing 45pms for a few days:eek: my out box couldnt cope!!! and unfortunately you have to send them singly - there is no means (well at least for me) to send a group of pms
b) not everybody starts on the same day so i think I would get confused as to what i was sending to whom!!
but I will bear it in mind as its maybe something i could work round given time to think about it.

greenbee staff parking was given as a reason for school closure round here, they were told by governors to open and staff should make other arrangements to either get in or park or bring shovels. Harsh? Suppose it's the same as other staff elsewhere were expected to. There was snow clearance ordered by DS1s school to deal with it but too late really, they are saying caretaker should have ordered it earlier/salted which is bringing it's own arguements about who's paid to do what & when, nightmare. I know they were clearing the local senior schools at 5.30am & they opened so some are coping better than others. Staff were told in many to come in regardless of closure to snow clear so they are arguing it is not their job. Clearly a massive issue with few easy solutions. Canada copes better than us, my aunty is a teacher there, she works 20 miles from home but if she can't get in she walks to the local one & teaches there. Much more sensible approach.
I guess whether you ask staff to come in or not depends on a number of factors. We weren't prepared to ask them to take a risk given the state of the roads. Salting or gritting the carpark wouldn't have prevented the foot of snow falling on it, and until this is compacted, no one in an ordinary car will be able to get into the school, park or get out. We got the borough council to send in a digger on Thursday, when they'd cleared the main roads so weren't so busy, but didn't salt as we were expecting more snow today/tomorrow. Once we know that there will be no more snow we can grit/salt to prevent ice, but there is no point in doing that on top of or under snow.
All employers have to make difficult decisions in these situations, not just schools. Many employers are saying that employees should not take unnecessary risks - either to themselves or to others (people seem to forget that driving for non-essential journeys in hazardous conditions is a very selfish act - the roads need to be clear for the emergency services and those who are needed at work to keep things like hospitals, power stations and other critical elements of our infrastructure manned).
I'm sure schools, businesses and others will be having a long hard look at their continuity planning over the next few weeks to work out what could be done differently in future, and what contingency plans can be put in place. At the end of the day the biggest issue with the school closures isn't the childcare, or absence records but the impact on childrens' education and that's what we need to consider. No point in insisting people come into school if they end up injured or worse - it won't help the children's education, even if it does stop them hanging around on the street corners throwing snowballs.
The same applies to a lot of businesses. I know it's tough having a couple of weeks like this, but at the end of the day creative thinking can allow the critical stuff to be done, and if your workforce, equipment, premises etc all make it through the cold snap safe and sound, you have a lot to be grateful for and with a bit of teamwork can probably make up for the hiatus.
Having had my rant, I'm going to head off now and do something constructive!0 -
