to get the browser into portrait mode, at least.
Have been surfing around today trying to decide on my next phone and so far think the N900 is in the lead. Was going to get an iphone but the camera on the nokia swings it for me I think.
O byer the web is great, but I think handsfree calling and phone book and menu is a must for this phone. But something Id expect nokia to add soon.Kind Regards

Me again.
Is the N900 from Nokia Retail (Mobile Phones Direct) unbranded? I dont want a branded phone. Also what is the position of returning if say I cant get a signal at work. One more thing what is their 'fair usage policy' with regards to data.

You need to enable maemo-devel repositories (application manager -> application catalogues). If anyone here wants to see WHY this is SOOO much more useful than an iPhone, and why the iPhone is nothing more than a gimmick learn how to use Linux.
This really is a computer in your pocket. The ONLY phone since the N95 that has comparable features (and the only device I really wanted ever since it was first posted online!)
maemo.org is your first port of call for anything related to this.0 -

Has anyone made use of VOIP calling on the N900?
This is certainly a feature that looks very interesting as it could potentially save money on calls.
If it really took off it could even lead to networks essentially operating as a mobile ISP rather than primarily as a mobile voice provider which would mean you would only need pay for data, which takes care of everything.0 -

Ive used it, using skype and its ok. But call quality is only as good of the speed of the network where you are at the time. If near a openzone or wireless, then could be free calling.Kind Regards

:(I just want to have a bit of a moan, i like the device (when it works) but I pre ordered mine and finally recieved it on December 8 (the day before I was due to go on a long holiday to Oz over xmas and new year).
Whilst i was away i became aware that the device would reboot itself randomly and also would shut itself down when i opened the keyboard. After 17 reboots if you havent shut it down properly it will stop booting. So i was away with a brick that wouldnt boot
I emailed Mobile Phones Direct about this issue on my blackberry (who i bought it from) but I and they couldn't do much as i was in Australia.
Upon my return to the UK I have contacted both Nokia.co.uk and also MPD to get a replacement phone, this is a hardware fault (i have since reflashed the device and upgraded the firmware but the issue still exists) which was confirmed when i took it onto my local Nokia Care Centre. Nobody wants to take responsibility for this and i am extremely disapointed by the customer service from MPD and Nokia.
I can see me getting a Motorola Milestone if Nokia cant sort this out and I can see why they will continue to loose ground in the phon market against Apple and others.
If you can buy this phone from somewhere other than MPD then I would suggest that you do as MPD have just left a very bitter taste

Also I used the VOIP functions whilst away in Australia and have to say i was very impressed with the simplicity and ease in which it worked.0

Manky thanks
i got mine from Nokia Retail and it is unbranded. i think it is only the vodaphone supplied N900's that are branded.
If ordering online/over phone you have 7 days to evaluate the device anyway - consumer law.
Also, Nokia Retail say they have a 7 day no quible return policy but when my N900 turned up if was covered in stickers and literature stating that once it was opened it couldn't be returned and various other stuff to put you off returning it.The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

I got my phone via this route and can also second it came unbranded and not sim locked.
As for VOIP I have mine set up for Sipgate - much better than Skype. Very simple to configure and the quality is excellent, you just need an internet connection for it to work. The quality is as good as the mobile connection if you use your network's connection, if you use WiFi it is as good as a cordless phone on a landline.0
