Cook Something Different Challenge

Today I bought a cut of meat that I've never had before. It's bavette, and when I googled "bavette" I found out that it's flank and it's rather tough. I bought in an organic shop as it was on special offer, and it's a very big piece - just over 1kg (about 2.2 lb).
I think the best way to prepare it is in a slow cooked stew, so that will give me the opportunity to use up a few bits of vegs I have in the fridge. The more I think about it, the more i like it.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
I made a tofu scramble for the first time today. Its basically a vegan version of scrambled egg,I also added extras like red onion ,peppers and a few herbs. Was actually quite tasty0

I had a tofu salad this evening. Just diced some tofu (the firm sort) and tossed into a large green salad with some chopped onions and a generous extra virgin olive oil dressing. Delicious.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

I was thinking of this thread recently, too, so thanks for resurrecting it!
I made a veggie crumble last week (steam pumpkin, broccoli, carrots, onions) cover with savoury crumble and lots of cheese, bake - delicious!:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -

I used to love scrambled tofu- I haven't had it for years but you just reminded me of it. It's delicious with courgettes if you have a glut in the summer. I also like it with onion and mushroom, plus a good pinch of chilli powder or smoked paprika!Penelope_Penguin wrote: »I was thinking of this thread recently, too, so thanks for resurrecting it!

Can I ask a really dim question please- what do you put in a savoury crumble topping? Also do you add any kind of sauce/stock to the vegetables? Sounds delicious.
I am completely stuck in a cooking rut at the moment- it's a combination of going back to work after mat leave, trying to save money and trying to lose weight. I must make more effort though- particularly to use things I already have in the cupboard and freezer.
I did make a quinoa pillaff the other day which was really yummy.:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator0 -
ooooohhh thanks hotcookie for giving the thread the kiss of life
I tried loads of new stuff when this started and fully intend to get back into the habit.
My recent purchases of Jamies 30mins and The Takeaway Secret
mean I have plenty to go atSo much for using the ones I have..........
Anyway recently I have attempted
Jamies Chicken Pie full meal from the above
Jamies Piri Piri chicken
Jamies Steak Baguette
Takeaway Secret Crispy Shredded Chicken (make with steak though)
Looking like I have slipped back to things I know I will like so on the basis of being brought back to life I will commit to my original pledge of doing somat I haven't done before..........watch this space :cool:0 -
I have a veritable library of cookbooks given I am still in my 20s (imagine how many I could have collected in 10 or 20 years:eek:) and to ensure they get used, I pull out about 3 every month when I do my monthly meal plan and pick 2-3 new recipes to try.
To help with this, I try to bookmark recipes that I would like to try one day whenever I first get a recipe book and am reading it through so when I come to do my meal plan, there are already recipes marked for me to try.
This makes it quite cost effective as well as I just pick a couple of things that may need specific ingredients and then fill up the rest of the plan with things I know are quick/good-value.
Recently I have tried
+ Pork souvlaki and tzatziki (pork marinated in oregano, s and p, red wine vinegar, olive oil and grilled)
+ Jamie Oliver oriental chicken broth from the Naked Chef I think
+ Nigella chicken with chorizo and potatoes
+ JO sea bass w fennel seeds and sweet potatoes- a new fave and works really well with Sainsburys frozen sea bass so not tooooo expensive
+ Italian meatloaf
plus the usual curry experimentations!0 -
Tonight I made one of those 'throw it all in and see what happens' meals. We had a number of things in the fridge that needed eating up so I threw the following things into my large lidded wok.
1 chopped onion
1 red pepper chopped
1 yellow pepper chopped
1 red chilli chopped
cubed leftover roast pork
6 chopped mushrooms
1/4 pint(ish) stock
I cooked it for 10-15 mins then added cornflour to thicken and cream to thin it down again. Served it with baked potatoes and it was scrumdiddlyicious:jI like to live in cloud cuckoo land :hello:0 -
Jamie Oliver's 30 minute oozy mushroom risotto
This was really quite easy to make-zapping the porcini in with the onions and celery is an insipred action I have to say-you get the richness of flavour, without the faff of soaking them, and I liked just using the kettle rather than having an extra saucepan of stock bubbling away (I admit I used stock cubes-I never seem to have enough home made stock for the recipes I want!)
I only had portobella and chestnut mushrooms but they were lovely grilled, and I was pretty short of thyme (my herb patch seems to have died boo hoo-need to get more thyme, I feel lost without the ability to throw handfuls into my food...
Really nice, easy risotto, big success0 -
