Yesterday I tried a different spag bol called 'Tagliatelle al Ragu Bolognese' for a change. It turned out to be very rich and we all enjoyed it. I'll probably make it again. The quantities serve 4.
55g butter
55g minced pancetta or prosciutto fat
1 finely chopped carrot, onion and celery stalk
100g lean minced beef
100g lean minced pork (I used sausage meat)
1 glass dry white wine
chicken stock or beef stock
3 Tbsp tomato puree
seasoning
Melt butter and add the pancetta fat and veg. Fry gently for around 10 mins.
Add minced meats and break up with wooden spoon. Cook for 15 mins. Add wine and bubble for a few mins. Add some stock and the tomato paste. Simmer for around 60 mins until cooked, adding more stock as necessary. Season. (I added a little fresh basil before serving and also added about half tsp sugar.) Cook tagliatelle and serve with the sauce and grated parmesan.
Later this week I hope to make Sweet Potato Gratin (bought the sweet pots. for half price in M&S) from the Cook Yourself Thin book, and will probably serve with salmon.0 -
Tonight I've had baked haddock fillets with thinly sliced green peppers placed on top then some HM breadcrumbs and some parmesan chesse. Yummy!0

I've just made these and they're yummy! I halved the recipes and didn't use parsley, oh and used a dash of milk as didn't have any yogurt. Just had half of one warm and will be going back shortly to test the other half
Do you think they'd freeze ok?Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100

mmmm i love fish pie I have done THIS one and its lovely you could just substitute the fish you have got available:j
Nothing to report new today - still eating the freezer contents from last weeks attempt
This one is from the Ministry of Food books which I wasn't too keen on. It was OK but not rich enough for me. There's another fish pie recipe in one of his older books whicih is nicer but a bit more of a faff. I think it's called Jamies Fantastic Fish Pie.0 -
Hmmm, I had a primary school teacher called Mr Lahey. I doubt he could be the same one though LOL! Unusual name all the same.
I've tried a few new ideas recently. I got a copy of the original Delia Frugal food and she suggests 'Sausage Boulangere'. I've done the boulangere potatoes before, but not with sausages. She said to fry them, but I just put them in on the top of the potatoes. THey browned as they're in a hot oven. It was really nice.
Did Rosti yesterday an oven baked recipe, but I used some parsnips in with the potatoes and it was really nice."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I've found this thread quite late but in 2009 I made a new years resolution to took at least one new meal a month. The reason was linked to my desire to save money by cooking from scratch and to get healthier at the same time (i've discovered I like knowing whats in my food!). Over a year on and I'm now a good food mag subscriber (It was a xmas present) and have various cook books.
Since the new year I've tried to get onto the new year recipe wagon. So far I've fell back in love with lamb shoulder thanks to Jamie's slow roasted shoulder, discover sweet potato wedges, a couple of soup recipes to take to work for lunch and these main meals:-
