    Thanks for the advice!

As we have paid for a package I'm hoping that we can either pay a cash deposit or waive the right to charge to our room (or both) as our accommodation is already paid for.

Does anyone know if you need a credit card to check in at Mandalay Bay?

We are going next week for 10 nights, don't have a credit card either. Hadn't thought about this before but really worried now.

Hotel is all paid for through holiday company and we are only taking $ and traveller cheques. Do you think they would accept a Visa Debit if a card is really needed?

    Thanks

They might take a debit card if you have enough money in your account for the hold they put on it.

Alternatively tell them to put a block on making charges to the room and it shouldn't be necessary.

Some hotels will allow you to waive the right to charge things to the room and leave a one-off cash deposit. I'm sure they would take a debit card, but bear in mind that they will put a hold to the value of the pre-authorisation amount (not unusual to be $100+/night) so those funds would be locked up until after the end of your trip...so be sure you know what the amount of the hold will be before handing your card over. May be worth calling them and asking what the options are so you can be prepared.

I stayed at NYNY in June and had paid in full with Thomas Cook, At checkin I was asked if I wanted to leave my credit card for "extras" I said no thanks and that was that. They didn't even try and get me on the resort fee.

Just booked Vegas for June 2011 with Virgin PE, on the new route from Manchester staying at the Bellagio with a lake view room (cause it'll be my 40th).

We usually go with Thomas Cook but it was getting far too messy trying to book extra leg room seats now they will be ditching the PE cabin. Its cost an arm and both legs but heyho thats what we work for.

It's a topic that will get you a lot of different responses and potentially disagreements...it's been discussed here before several times with a variety of replies.

As a general guide this is fairly accurate in terms of the general 'rules' I think (though we don't normally tip 10-15% at a buffet and this is the only place I've ever read that suggested myself) - others will disagree .

I never take creditcards to Vegas -I use a mix of cash, debitcard and prepaid cards-This last trip I also had some travellers cheques too as I had all the money for a group meal for everyone and wanted to keep it entirely seperate.

I usually now stay at Harrahs group hotels-This last trip Caesars Palace wanted $200 a night deposit which I paid with cash and it was refunded to me when I checked out less room chargebacks (actually the only thing I charged was in room internet and they volunteered without me asking that I had enough points to pay for it that way).

I checked into the Flamingo next and was expecting to pay the same deposit but they informed me that as the room had no charges owing (it was comped but they explained it as it was prepaid) if I didn't want room charging facilities I didn't need to pay a deposit.

There doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rule at the Flamingo though-as I've got the same story in the past about no need to pay a deposit-then on my next trip -in the same circumstances they DID want a deposit <shrug> Doesn't seem to make any difference if it's comped or a paid rate so long as there is nothing owing when you arrive to check in.
