Just wondered if someone could advise if the AA Platinum challenge is worth doing?

Going to Vegas in Oct. Flying from Man to Vegas via Chicago. From there we are flying to Orlando via Dallas and finally back to Man via Chicago. All in Flight class W and O. All for $498, which I thought was excellent.

Do you think this is enough to get the Platinum? and because I have booked the flights now do I get less time with my perks or does it go on when you join the challenge? I am guessing I get the perks the next time I fly with AA?
I did the Platinum challenge when it was free so it was worth it. Now I think it costs $200. Yes you will have enough miles to gain it in one return flight, but as you said you will not get the perks until you take another flight. It only lasts till Feb. next year but after that you then drop down to gold for a year and even that has some nice little perks with it. Have a look over at flyertalk on the AAdvantage board, there is a whole section on the Challenge
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

New Direct Virgin Flights (Manchester --> Vegas)

Just a heads up for us dirty northerners.... the Manchester to Vegas direct flights are now available on Virgin's website (www.virgin-atlantic.com)

I've had a quick look and cheapest at the moment looks like 21st April - 28th April which is £528 for cattle class and only £466 using Miles Plus Money (2k miles)

.... bear in mind that Easter Sunday is 24th April so I thought flights covering these dates would be more expensive than the rest of the schedule available!

Anyways, I was expecting daft flight times but they're actually really rather good!

Hopefully a good sale will reap some better prices!!! :)

    Outgoing:

    Return:
Be careful when booking these though. The flight is only direct twice a week, if you pick any other day it will let you book it but you will be flown down from MAN to LGW to catch that flight over

The twice-weekly service will operate on Thursdays and Sundays, from 3rd April 2011

Both the existing service and the new Manchester to Las Vegas route will be operated by a Boeing 747-400 fitted with 14 Upper Class Suites, 58 Premium Economy and 379 Economy seats

I'm not sure you would have enough points - you'll have to add it up - the legs in W will earn one q-point per mile, but the legs in O will only earn .5 q-points per mile.

    http://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/programDetails/eliteStatus/qualificationRequirements.jsp

We think it's worth doing if it's a reasonable fare. The extra bag (includes at least one person travelling with you booked together) is worth up to $50 per person per transatlantic leg...so we figure that we'll get our $200 back at least. Boarding early, checking in at the business class counter, lounge access, extra miles, all bonuses.

I'm also not sure you can book fares in USD? I've never worked out how to - but I've not looked into it too closely.

From what I recall, you call up - say you want to do the challenge and you then have 3 months (or 90 days, it's somewhat unclear) from the time you initiated the challenge to earn enough q-points to get there.

    There's a good guide here:

    http://www.flyerguide.com/wiki/index.php/Challenge_%28AA%29

There's another but I can't find it at the moment.

How long it lasts depends on when you take the flights...so if you are flying in October, you would in theory have platinum status until Feb 2012 rather than Feb 2011 I think...then drop to gold as stoneman said.

Challenges begun before June 16 of a given year earn status for the remainder of that year and the first two months of the following year (8-14 months total); challenges begun on or after June 16 grant status for the remainder of that year, the following year, and the first two months of the year after (14-20 months total). Challenges can be started on the 1st and 16th of the month and you can request a specific start date (within the next few months). Be very explicit about requesting a start date unless you want the one offered to you.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

    Oh, nice one!

Although I'm guessing we'll still have to fill one in when we go via PHL this week!

We went through PHL on 4th May and didn't need the green form.

good news is it tells you when you click on the flight you want whether it will take the via. Gatwick route and its all written on the schedule you're shown before you book.

really want there to be a sale on now so I can see what they can knock the prices down to
