MayI have played a lot online and with mates once a month for a few years.
I notice you played all sorts of poker on the tables. I have only played 3 card and in the Orleans they have a hold em game which is fun.
Never played pai gow or any of the others you mentioned (dont know how to)
Oh you must try Pai Gow! It's a table game near 3 card poker/texas hold'em/let it ride/casino war games and we both absolutely loved it as you can play for ages and lose very little but potentially gain a lot. We saw it in every casino and the minimum bets start from $10 (normally $15 though).
Basically you get dealt 7 cards and so does the dealer.
Out of the 7 cards you have to split them into a 2 and a 5 card hand.
Lets say you have A K 9 7 7 5 4 for example. You have to have the highest cards in the 5 card hand, which would be the 7's. The 2 card hand will have the next two highest cards, in this case the A K. In order to win the bet, both hands must beat both the dealers hands. In order to lose the bet, both hands must be beaten BY the dealer. Therefore there are a lot of push's which make the game last a long time. How we made our money was on the side (or fortune bet) where you can bet anything from $1 to $100. This will pay out certain odds depending on the hand you have, starting with 3 of a kind upwards. Within the same night, both OH and myself had a straight flush which pays 50 - 1. We each bet $5 on the side bet so that's a payout of $250 each. Other times you will play the side bet for ages and get nothing but that's the way it goes.
There is also a joker within the pack. This can be used as an Ace or to complete a straight or a Flush. It was by having the joker that we obtained our straight flushes.
The other card game I mentioned is Crazy 4 poker. This requires a bit more $$$ as you either tend to lose or win big. Basically you get dealt 5 cards and so does the dealer. You make the best hand from 4 out of the 5 cards, and that hand must beat the dealers hand. Again, we made our money playing the side bet. OH got a straight flush which paid something like 55 - 1. It's quite quick and if you lose a few hands your money will disappear quick.
I hope that makes sense!
PS - It was our first time playing both games and we found both the dealers and other players incredibly helpful. At first, I would literally show the dealer my hand and they would tell how to play. If you are unsure ask, they are so happy to help it's untrue. After half a dozen or so hands we got to grips with it and we were helping out other players!0 -
MayHey what is the Aria like now? Are most of the rooms still having trouble with all the techno whizz stuff and is the casino still !!!!?
We weren't impressed with the Aria. The biggest let down with our room was housekeeping.
The furnishings were quite dusty probably because the dark wood furniture and glass tops attract dust. There were cup/glass ring marks on glass top above mini bar which hadn't been cleaned. There was a blown bulb in the bathroom and the windows were filthy. Nothing that was worth complaining about, but issues we haven't had in much lesser rooms.
We were allocated 23102 on the 23rd floor and were upgraded to a City View which is normally $30 a night extra, but I don't think it's worth paying for. The room felt quite small. It is supposed to be 520 sq ft, but seemed much smaller than Bally's room which is a minimum of 450 sq ft.
The techie remote control was a pest as, if you pressed the wrong button, everything went off.
It was similar to the Bellagio in decor.
I doubt we'll be back.
One good thing about it is the buffet which is excellent, at least for breakfast. They had hand carved bacon, lamb and spiced ham. Everything was very fresh and excellent quality.0 -
This thread is enormous!
If I want to book a last minute flight and go to Vegas in a couple of days time - where is the best place to look? Are there still charter flights out of Manchester? I seem to remember them a few years back.
And to some of the people talking about poker - it's table stakes - if you have $100 and the other guy has $10,000 - the most he can win from you is $100 he can't 'bully you off the hand' - so it's just like you are playing against other players with $100. There is a certain strategy you should play when shortstacked which I won't go into here - but as this is a money saving forum I've got to recommend some of you guys don't play poker!0 -

I know the most he could get from you is $100 if that's all you have to play with but the point I was making was that he can afford to be a lot of aggressive and make big bets pre-flop to get you out the game or if you call, it could be $10 $20 $30 and half your chips and if you don't hit anything you could lose a lot. Also if you do try and bluff with a short stack and get called you're onto a loser. He can bluff all he likes (to an extent) as he has so much to fall back on.
Anyway, these are only my opinions and everyone has different views so it doesn't matter anyway. For lower rollers who want to play cash, I would recommend limit as opposed to no limit0 -

Yes, I am flying from Manchester on Wednesday (oh yes, 4 days to go) with Thomas Cook.Don't wait for your ship to come in, swim out to it.0 -
My point is that with a shortstack you shouldn't be calling to hit anyway because most of the time you won't have the odds - correct shortstack play is generally going to be to fold or to raise either all in or a comitting about so you can get it in on the flop - there is no point in bluffing as you don't have enough chips.
And he can't really bluff too much against a shortstack because he is going to find himself pot comitted a lot of the time if the shortstack goes all in - a good short stack player can be a major annoyance for a full stacked player
So yeah I agree that Limit Holdem is better for more recreational players.cloudy_nines wrote: »I know the most he could get from you is $100 if that's all you have to play with but the point I was making was that he can afford to be a lot of aggressive and make big bets pre-flop to get you out the game or if you call, it could be $10 $20 $30 and half your chips and if you don't hit anything you could lose a lot. Looks like i will have to try pai gow now...I have only been to Vegas 8 times and the name has always put me off:eek:. I knew about the side bets as i do play 3 card and like you say you can win big, but of course you can go a lot of hands losing it as well.0
