I'm going to Vegas in February, but only for 6 nights. Is the Grand Canyon really worth the long trip, or would a day trip to LA be better?
It depends on what you're more interested in - they're vastly different experiences...though in February there's a reasonable chance of snow at the GC, and evening temps will be well below freezing...so that may impact the decision for some people.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
SeptemberOnly thing that worries me is the last time I travelled BA they lost our luggage :eek:The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0

Having driven to both from Vegas, I personally wouldnt do either in a day trip. I would stay over 1 night at the GC and 2 or more in LA.
Both are possible to get there and back in a day but what would you do in LA in the few hours you would have? the place is MASSIVE and very easy to get lost with traffic nose to taail in many places all day.
If it is your first trip maybe stay in Vegas for the 6 days and leave the others for next time, alternativley you could fly to the GC but I cant comment on that as not done it.0 -

Our first trip was only 5 days and we did one of the helicopter tours to the GC. It was great. We choose the early one. Think it was 6am, and by 10.30am, we were back at our hotel. It's great if you don't have a huge amount of time, or don't want the long drive.......Love MSE, Las Vegas and chocolate!0 -

Definitely agree with this.
The Grand Canyon is a really long way by anything other than a Helicopter. We did this too and it's great if you only have a little time.
As mentioned, LA is not a day trip kind of place. Not only is a pretty long drive, the traffic in LA can be atrocious.
The only real place’s to visit near Vegas is Red Rock Canyon, which is dirt cheap at £5 for the car but not that great. It’s a mediocre scenic drive at best.
Mount Charleston/Mount Charleston Lodge is ok too. Go for breakfast, you’ll see some snow (if you haven’t seen enough already). Make sure it’s not too snowy though or you’ll never get up there.
Vegas is an entertainment town. Book lots of shows, have lots of nice meals, do a bit shopping at the outlets and have a little gamble. Enjoy yourself and don’t go looking for anything else because there really isn’t much to see outside of Vegas.

JuneYou can also normally opt to leave a deposit in cash at check-in if you don't want the hold on your card - if it's a credit card, unless the hold will cause you to hit your limit and keep you from using your card for other things - it's not really an issue...if you put a debit card against the room then it might be more of a concern. Most hotels will put a hold of a certain amount per night against the room. In some cases you can decline to have access to charging to your room, using the phone in the room, etc and they will waive the deposit - really depends on the hotel.
Just had a look and Flamingo's T&Cs says:
A deposit is not required unless you would like incidental charging privileges. For incidental charging to the room, a $100 per day credit card or cash deposit will be taken in addition to your entire room and tax. Alternatively, a one time $100 flat fee of cash or credit card may be given, however, this would only allow phone and movie privileges.
Youre a star, thanks very much
Deposit not required is music to my ears!
Thanks guys, still love this thread.0 -
MarchHarrahs started this a while ago but most of the other hotels owned by other groups still charge it. I was so pleased when they started it and it definitely factors into choosing where I stay/I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

When I was last in Vegas we stayed for 7 nights, but we drove up to the Grand Canyon. We went to the part with the Skywalk, I think its the West Rim, it was well worth it. We opted not to fly as it was still in the hot months and I know a few people who have done it and been sick from the turbulence due to the heat. The helicopter tours were so expensive too, so we drove up, I really enjoyed it! It is true that it is a long drive, but its an experience to see the vast expanses and there is a very strange little town that you pass through on the way, I think it was called Dolan Springs.. it is almost like a trailer park with some shanty houses! Also on the way you drive over the Hoover Dam which is also quite exciting! I suppose it depends on your plans, budget and how much of a desire you have to get there on whether it is worth the journey.0 -

If so, how much did it roughly cost and how long of a journey is it?
Thanks.

hey Photome long time no see around here , you were one of the true stars of thread back in the beginning . welcome back , nothing much has changed including the Virgin flight .
Best pool in Vegas = Mandalay Bay IMO ( and a lot of others as well )
you could probably make savings nearer the time , but assuming you cancel the MGM bungalow offer without penalty , and you are happy with the price as is , no reason not to book now then see what else comes along between now and the week you go .
flew US Airways into Philly . good seats and seats arrangement . we were delayed a few hours , but that can happen to any airline . would use again
sorry tretts
i would have to say mgm, find the m-bay pool is run like a millatry operation with so many life guards not relaxing at all (i counted 11 whistles in the space of 5 mins one day..)0
