I am doing some holiday baking with DD, she wants to crush maltesers and put them in brownies. I was wondering if anyone has done this before, or knows if they will they hold their crunch, or go soggy/melt?
Thanks0 -
I do a very popularly requested cake in my family, known at the Malteser cake. It resulted from me messing up a recipe for a chocolate cake - in excluding the coffee granules, I also missed out the 150ml or so water it called for, without realising. It made for a thick batter and a cake that was quite brownie-like. Being so dense, it fell apart the minute I took it out of the case so in an attempt to salvage it, I broke it up further, layered the pieces in a bowl, spooned the ganache frosting over each layer, and chucked in a handful of Maltesers to finish it off and make it look intentional. Served warm, everyone went nuts for it and I've had to mis-make the cake on purpose ever since!
Recently, I had to make puddings to serve 40 for my mum's big birthday party and trying to save some time, I decided to give the complicated cake recipe a miss and replace it with a brownie recipe I'd recently tried (that went down well with family too), as the texture and taste were quite similar. No one noticed the difference!
Anyway, with some fine tuning, I learnt that it was best to add the Maltesers fresh - reheating them amongst the cake if it was made earlier in teh day then warmed up after dinner resulting in slightly soggy Maltesers. So nowadays, I reheat the cake, make the ganache fresh (only takes 2 mins) and scatter in the Maltesers just prior to serving. It's a slightly messier pudding them brownie slices, so needs to be served in a bowl with a spoon, but no one has disliked it yet - just an idea for your DD perhaps.0 -
Sorry I don't know about maltesers but bashed up crunchies work well in brownies or cakes.:D0

Thanks krlyr and mini. We've made them and they are cooling now, I stupidly whisked the maltesers in with all the other ingredients rather than fold them in at the end, so they were very broken up so not holding out much hope.
Krlyr, your idea sounds amazing. We will definitely have a go in the future.
Mini - crunchies - yum!0 -
I put malteasers in the middle of wee cups of left over filling of choclate tart and baked. Tasted nice, but malteaser wasn't crunchy but sticky/toffee ish on inside.0

Well, it's not worked, they were too crushed up I guess. DD loves them but a little too sweet for me now with the added sugar from melted malteser.0

ive merged this with our chocolate brownies thread which has loads of recipes
Also if you google malteser brownies there are loads of recipes so yes, it seems they would work
