there are some Tills which do not even have the facility to de-activate, for example in my store it's the "Basket Only" tills which don't have a deactivator built in, luckily they are right next to the exit doors so we are happy to assist customers having difficulty.

 so in your shop anyone who uses the 'basket only' till in your shop are likely to end up having 'difficulty' at the exit if they have purchased something with a security tag that needs deactivating ?
no wonder customers like me are getting fed up with this continuing to happen

Yes that is exactly the problem...all the Cashiers at the Basket tills can do is to remove the actual tag (normally a sticker) by pulling it off, otherwise its a walk to one of the other tills to de-activate it. If retailers provided the staff with sufficient equipment to do our jobs then it wouldn't happen

I can sympathise with the OP - as I've had this happen a few times recently when it was utmost inconvenient. Both times with hard plastic tags.

1st Time - Bought a suit to wear to my graduation ceremony. Took it home, put it in the cupboard for a few days, pulled it out to take to work (ceremony was after work), standing on the tube and a woman pointed out that the tag was still on it! No alarms had gone off, and I hadn't noticed previously as it'd been in the cupboard. Had to rush around town back to the store that I'd bought it from, but of course, didn't have the receipt as it was at home!! Saw security on the way in and pointed out my dilemma, and was then treated like a criminal by the Sales Assistant when I asked her to remove it! I told her I'd seen security on the way in, but she was still a right c*w about it! Was hardly my fault!!

2nd Time - Bought a ski jacked from TK Maxx to take on ski-trip. Took it home, put in the cupboard (need to stop doing that!), pulled it out on the evening before our flight to pack my suitcase, and it still had the tags on it!! But of course, it was past shop closing time, and we were leaving at 8am the next morning! So I had to buy another jacket at the resort (not nearly as cheaply as the first one!). But the real cheek came when I went to return it early January when we'd come back from holidays. I had my receipt, but of course, the 30 days had passed now hadn't they! I no longer needed the jacket, as their error had forced me to pay an extortionate amount for a replacement one. I needed my money back, as I couldn't afford to keep both anyway. Had a very hard time trying to explain that to the SA, particularly given that it was in amongst all the New Year returns items....she didn't really care! Ended up getting a manager involved, but it was a bit of effort to get that one sorted.

Both times were a large inconvenience, and both times I was treated badly as a customer who had done nothing wrong. I was polite, but frustrated, and the stores did little to help improve my mood!

So....after all that, i can see where the OP is coming from, particularly with Plastic Tags. It can be a real inconvenience, and the last thing I need as a customer is to be treated badly when I didn't do anything wrong!

Our detaggers work some of the time. But the main problem is some tags are built into the box. I deactivated one item yesterday that had FIVE electronic tags hidden about it!

Also, can I get £10 every time a customer makes an error?
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

I have a clear conscience when the alarm goes off so don't flustered or
embarrassed. Usually have the receipt to hand when I know box contains security tag. It's no big deal.

no - but I'm sure that if the same customer made the same mistake week after week and very rarely bothered to say sorry and wasted staff time , I am sure the customer would end up banned from the shop

    It's no big deal.

it is if it keeps happening and each time you are delayed/inconvenienced

Unless it is clothing that I have bought I generally just carry on through. If the security tag is stuck to the box it will bin the soon. If security are there and want to sort it out fair enough but I'm not going to go look for someone.

only if you have to take it back to get the tag removed is it really an inconvenience, if the bleeper go offs you get checked and your on your way, its not as if your taken to a cell in the back of the shop and stripped searched and held for an hour !!!
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

No but it is extremely embarassing when the security guard is very rude...happened to me at Asda Living last week.
Also, last month I bought a top in Oasis. Got it home, it had the big plastic tag bobble still attached. It hadnt set the alarm off on the way out but....yep, it went off on the way in. The staff were quite unpleasant about it til I showed them I had a reciept. If Id stolen it why on earth would I take it back? Do shoplifters return the goods to change the size?
