MOT retest question

my husband MOTs cars for a living, that's all they do - no repairs
and with people like you it's no wonder my darling husband comes home after a day at work shaking his head that people can be so deluded or stupid
I am sick to death of having to tell MOT testers how to test cars. I had the last one fail my wife's Mitsubishi FTO on emissions because he applied the wrong test. He was shown the V5 which showed the correct first date of use but didn't take that into account as per the MOT regulations. Failing MK3 and MK4 Escorts on corroded battery trays was also a favourite even though it wasn't actually a testable item. I've seen cars pass with obvious fails as well.
Sorry but the fact that he is a tester in a garage that doesn't do repairs means diddly squat as to his competency.0 -
So if your car fails, on say severe rusting, or Windscreen crack, youd expect the garage to be able to fix that?0

good to see the usual internet bullies are here again0

Jeannie was correct but did not explain in full (and so was partially incorrect). What you wrote is correct also but because you also did not explain in full, you are also partially incorrect.
If the car remains at the garage for repair and retest within 10 work days, the garage would have no option of choosing whether to charge or not, they would be unable to charge legally.
A free retest only applies to an item on the list and retested before the end of the next day or, if the car fails on ANY OTHER ITEM, is left with the test station for repair, and is tested within 10 working days (basically 2 weeks) then there is no retest fee.
If you take the vehicle away to be repaired whatever it fails on and it it returned within 2 weeks and retested the test station can charge a maximum of half the full test fee, or any figure below that amount including £0.00
The correct way of writing it without explaining it in detail would be to say
It all depends on a combination of- the reason for failure
- The time taken before the next test
- whether or not the car is left with the test station to be repaired

cheers, thanks for your support, ny husband is a fully timeserved qualified mechanic who has city and guilds level 5 and is a technical engineer and an engineering technician to give him his true title. he is also the person who does the quality control so i think he is competant as do his employers and VOSA
the point i was making was it isnt in their interest to fail things to make work, unlike some national chains i can think of'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0
