Except the retest at this garage would then have been completely free - as it has been at every other garage I've ever been to for the twelve odd MOTs I've paid for over the years...

why would it have been 'free' did they say that or just another assumption

It says so in their website's T&Cs. Are you a mechanic by any chance?!

all the other garages in the area that I rang could do the work,

so you asked the other garages BUT did not see fit to ask the first one

They don't return manually either and so are actually 'obstructing' my view when stuck across the screen!
So you took a car you knew was faulty to an MOT test and now it's failed.

Are you really surprised? Why didn't you arrange to have the fault rectified before submitting the car for a test?

I would just take it back there for the retest, another garage might find something else to fail it on

I asked the other garages when I was desperately ringing round trying to find one who could do the work AFTER the MOT had been carried out and the original garage saw fit to inform me they couldn't do the job. What were you saying about assumptions?

Can you post a link please?

Edit: Here are the rules MOT stations abide by regarding re-tests - anything better is a decision an individual garage offers

yes she did ask and I pointed out what is what, garage mechanics are not well known for their phsycic abilities,so why whinge if you have not asked the right questions:confused:

She did ask - and I doubt she expected to get a reply from someone so abrupt and rude, not to mention condescending! I'm guessing you didn't get any over Christmas............ Or are you training to be an up your own ar5e lawyer and practising your cross examining on here?

No not a mechanic, but my mechanic is also an MOT tester, and I having owned/bought/and sold cars for over 30 years have some idea of what is what.

in any business especially one involving car repair garages it is essential that you ask the right questions and give clear and concise instructions

Because I wanted the repair and MOT done at the same time. The fault has only arisen in the last few days, as the MOT became due. It is inconvenient for me to get my car to a garage most of the time.
