Have you thought about getting a work place assessment for your back? Maybe your desk and seat are not helping with it?

I think it is called an occupational health assessment, or something similar!

I've been trained in the work place assesment and though my chair's not the best, it's not really that. I've had probems with my back in the past but nothing that physio/chiro can pinpoint that is actually wrong.Might be just that my core strenght is low again and it's catching up as I've been doing a lot of other stuff. Sometimes I just get what I call 'a weak back' but it usually goes in a day or two and this is the third day in row which is why I'm thinking I might of done too much when it's been 'not good'.

OH has a bad back, as he is a drummer and he does Alexander Technique exercises. He finds them really good.

Hey,thanks CMD. I know a bit about alexander technique and have had it as well a little bit. My classical riding instructor was well into it and other stuff similar.

Bad news. My back's totally gone now. My own fault though it could've gone doing anything. Went to play softball. First innings went fine, on second or third whilst we were fielding I reached forward to tag someone and it just went. Had to carry on as there wasn't enough of us, but played catcher for the rest of the match and didn't have to do much. We won. But I'm in so much pain now sometimes it almost makes you cry. No way I'm going to work tomorrow and Friday might be out as well. Theatre tomorrow night most likely is out for me as well. Damn.

This has only happened to me three times before, once in my teens and then twice in last couple of years, with the last one being not so bad but because it had happened before I finally got physio, which kind of helped but it was probably also cos it got better. It was basically core strengthening stuff though I think it's probably more to do with nerves. Went to chiro last time as well and they said there was nothing wrong with me. It's just like this spasm on my lower back that sometimes takes your breath away it hurts so much and at least a dull constant ache.

Bf not home tonight either so feeling very sorry for myself. :(

Awww Tirl that sounds like agony!! Could you get referred to a pain clinic re your back? As well as alexander technique - people also recommend pilates for strengthening your core... MBTs - people with back problems often swear by.... Backfriend - like a beanbag cushiony thing when you are sitting down may also help.... Heat... Baths... Hope you find something that works...

It does sound to me like you push yourself really hard exercise wise... and often do things to avoid letting others down... perhaps you need to refocus and look at what you enjoy the most about exercise and perhaps do more of that and less of others? I could be completely wrong... if so please forgive me...

Hope you feel better soon - chronic pain is no good at all!

Hi,thanks ladies for your support and suggestions. I very rarely get to this acute pain bit, last time was 2009 I think. But talking to bf (who came back home today to work from home and look after me) I think we've identified where it started. I think the first culprit was the surfing bit as I really struggled with bf's surfboard in the wind and waves. Then obviously I had those two runs and vb even though back wasn't feeling 100%. And softball was just last nail in the coffin. I do like my exercise but I wouldn't say I really push hard in any of them. In running I'm slow and building up but I think it's just combination of things that took me to this point again. Just need to build up everything slowly, strength, suppleness etc.

I do feel better today and got some sleep last night thanks to a friend who suggested a hot bath and a glass of wine (I know, shouldn't mix alcohol and painkillesr...). Been to the doctors and they've given me some new painkillers which I'll be using for couple of days. Back to work on Monday I think.

Hope that your back continued to improve over the weekend!

I actually got a bit of gardening done today which was a result... Only second time this year. I did a load of weeding and cheated and bought a ready done hanging basket... Beautiful LOL!

Thanks savingh. Yes, back has improved and ready to go to work tomorrow (boo! ;)). Won't do vb practice tomorrow night though.

We've been having some discussions with bf as well and at the moment looks like we're going to stay put in Cardiff. Last week I suggested that we should move to Bristol regardless that I haven't found a job there yet and I'd commute if necessary. However, we started to have a look at flats over there and bf went to see one the day my back went and other two lined up for the day after but came home to look after me instead. Still had a look on the internet about flats, prices, locations etc and it just seems that it would cost us more to live somewhere similar and we'd have to be further out.

So, we're looking into selling the car and buying a motorbike instead. It's a bit of an outlay as bf hasn't done his test so will have to start from the beginning. He used to have a scooter so I don't think he'll find it a problem. I already have a licence and most of the gear so we could both use it but it would mostly be a commuter bike. Who's OH had a bike for commuting? Sorry, just can't remember!:o

Have started having a look at new flats in our area too cos we really would like to have a garden/outside space. Went to see 3 today but none of them was as good as where we live now. But it's nice looking at places without having to find somewhere. Takes all the pressure off.

Hope everyone's had a lovely weekend. The weather has been absolutely beautiful here and it's been a shame I haven't been able to do much.

Ok, so am back to work. :( nah, it's ok really.

Will go and see how much I can do in softball training tonight and basically check if I'll be able to play on Wednesday. It's season's most important game so would like to be involved but don't worry, already told the coach that we'll need an extra person to cover as I'm not doing my back in again. So if I feel at all uncomfortable, I'll change position or go off.
