With a curtain it may be difficult, but with the lining, I think that she might be able to get away with it.
But I would always buy that little bit more of the material then less, just in case. If there is a small surplus then it can be used to line a bag, or even curtain tie backs. It would not matter if the lining doesnt come down to the bottom of the curtain, but to the hem line, so working on a 54" fabric width would work reasonably well.
(I wouldnt do it with the main fabric of a curtain incase it does sag at some stage.).
The other name for Press Studs is often Snap fasteners, or Poppers.
They are usual alread together on a piece of card, so the back may be behind the card and the front has the other connection on it? Some cheaper plastic ones are on a bit of a frame like Airfix Plane kits used to be on. In there case there should be two pieces. The technical term is the "male and female" for obvious reasons.
There was another question and I cannot remember what it is now. I will go back and see.! My memory is bad!.
I have been making a few bits this afternoon, a pvc childrens apron. I finished a small handbag, and a wallet.
Had hoped to sew most of the afternoon buy my daughter came over with the new baby, so I sort of got side tracked. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
The black out lining fabric doesn't fray as it is coated with some kind of plastic so just a small hem on the sides should do and I wouldnt have thought it would matter which way up you hang it either xx0

Thanks Rufusdog. I think I will probably try it that way and see. The curtains are with our rented house and don't hang that well anyway.
I've just been trying to work out how much fabric I would need to do it the "proper" way, so the 54" is the width not the drop, but I can't get my head around it at all!!!First date 10.2.2002

I had a good afternoon sewing today, started making up some more bags. I have cut out 4 of them and a couple of extra linings.
We are going up to London tomorrow to see OH's mum so I am going to see if that nice market stall is there.0 -
Hi everyone... it's my first time in here, because I am a complete novice!!! (I usually spend my time in the wedding forum!)
I need to make some blackout linings for my bedroom curtains... can you just please check a couple of things for me...
I have 2 windows, so 4 curtains (2 pairs) 1 pair are each 60"x53" and the other are each 84"x55"
The lining fabric I will buy tomorrow is 54" wide and solde by the metre. Could I, therefore, turn it on it's side, so the 54" width becomes the drop, as that's more or less the drop I need?
I have worked out, that if I use it "sideways" I will need a total of 288" which is 731cm, so do I buy 7.5m or 8m? It's £2.68 a metre.
When I make the linings, do I need to hem the fabric on all sides? I will use lining tape (I think it's called) at the top to hang them inside my current curtains on the plastic hooks.
Oh my goodness I've confused myslef BIG TIME now!!! If that makes sense to anyone please reply!!!
Thanks!!!
Emma xXx
ive made 6 roman blinds for our new house and used blackout lining on them all.
i did exactely the same i turned it round so the width became the drop and not had any problems at all.
the blackout lining does not fray so doesnt need hemming at all.
i cut mine to the size i wanted it to be so 1 inch on all sides smaller than the finished size of the blinds.0 -
I managed to make a childs apron, oil cloth one.
A handbag, and a wallet yesterday. Not much, but at least its better then nothing. I am waiting for the arrival of half a dozen purple zips to finish off the ones that I have already got cut out, and need a purple zip each. I am hoping that twin1 is coming back from town with us and will look after DGD this afternoon so that I can sew.
This morning I am off to my mums to let the fridge man in, so I shall cut their lawn. The fact that mine is desperately in need is another matter.
Happy sewing everyone.!When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Mooloo, thats spooky lol, I have just ordered some lilac coloured zips for the bags I am making. I was up early early, 4am lol, just couldn't sleep with OH snoring so went and did some sewing for couple of hours before coming down. Unpicked the ends bits off a quilt I am making as I wasn't happy with it. Got it sewn back up again and it looks a lot better now. Also got the next bits of my bags pinned ready to sew tomorrow.0

I turned my lining fabric round sideways too as the strip I had wasn't long enough. I did hem the sides because I didn't know it didn't fray
so I'll know that for the next time I make a blind
. Still preoccupied with knitting the baby blanket I'm making for my nephew. It's going to take me ages! He'll probably be a teenager by the time I finish it

Oh my, I was just meandering around the interweb and decided to see how much my blind would cost if I had bought it from Laura Ashley made to measure. £190.89 ! That's mad ! The fabric only cost me 50p from the charity shop and I already had the lining fabric (which as we all know is always in the remnants bin at dunelm!). I spent £6 ish on cord and toggle bits but would have to buy the cleat whether made to measure or not.
