Hi there! I am new to sewing and I am on a real tight budget. I am finding it difficult to get hold of some cheap cotton material to practice making things. I have looked on eBay, looked in department store but all really expensive. Any ideas anyone?
:j
I shop with these online stores http://www.fabricland.co.uk/ and
http://www.efabrics.co.uk/
The postage can be a bit hefty and bump up the cost but I haven't much choice as we have no fabric shops close by.
positivelymummy - your quilt is beautiful. I haven't made one yet, I've bought a walking and quarter inch foot but am nervous about committing to starting.
loopychriss - I love your morse bags. The fabrics work really well together and look great.0 -
I use both of these companies quite a lot for fabric. They both have a set postage rate of around £4.50 ish which is good if you buy quite a bit as fabric is heavy.

I also use this company for haberdashery and some basic fabrics. They are handy because if your order is over £10 they don't charge delivery at all. They have a catalogue that they will send on request. Only post or telephone ordering though.

Love it love it love it :T! It's beautiful. Looks so professional, you clever thing.
Also loving all the links on where to get fabric - my first stop though is the local charity shops (thanks ladies for the tip-off!)....0 -

Apart from that I've not managed to get near the machine because of my 15yr old DS who has Aspergers. He reckons that the sewing machine could take over from his laptop addiction  He has really impressed me with how quick he worked out how to thread it and even fill the bobbin and put that in properly. His sewing skills, like mine, need some work though.
Anyway, he would like to make a messenger bag. any idea where I can find an easy pattern/tutorial. We don't do zips yet
also if anyone has any other ideas for simple projects for a teenage boy I'd appreciate the links. Most of what I can find is more geared towards girls.
Hi KarmaCookie
Would this maybe be any good for your son? He could use more boyish fabric than the one shown and hopefully its not too difficult? I came across it earlier today and remembered your post. x

Been busy making wiggly bags these last few days, Shezmit on this thread was asking for them (I will post them today).
I did find the instructions a bit tricky but I think overall this is what it should be like - approx A6 in size.
When I come across more kiddie material I will knock a few more of these up and post em on.You can stand there and agonize........

They are used in hospital for poorly kids. Lots of children who have central lines known as "Wiggly" (a tube coming out the chest for IV access) wear ‘wiggly bags’. They are little bags attached to ribbon and worn around the neck which lets the line rest in them, taking the weight, stopping them from getting tugged and keeping them clean. You can stand there and agonize........
