  • It's a piece of fabric which is 18" x 22" (most places seem to sell it in inches). If you cut a yard of fabric into quarters, it would be 9" x 44" (the most common width of fabric). As 9" isn't very much to work with when making patchwork, it is cut into what is called fat quarters, which means that it is double the lenth (18") but only half the width (22").

Thanks for putting me right about this, I honestly thought it was 50cm x 50cm. I've ordered 2 fat 1/4 for a messenger bag, the pattern says 1/2 metre. Mmm looks like i've made a bit of a boob! No doubt I'll find something to do with it!

ok, here it is..i finished my daughters quilt today, and i've already asked my dad to get me a walking foot for my sewing machine for my birthday!LOL, putting the binding on was a bit tricky..the sqaures i hand quilted and i finished off the binding (edge) by hand on the back side of it..i have enough fabric left for another one too!!

btw the fabric is by Patty Young and called Andalucia

  • I have bought from several different people, but one that I do use quite often is charlieakapookies.gif(USA - so ebay.com).

She sells something she calls pounds, which are basically fabric samples that were on cardboard headers. She weighs them and sells a pound or pound and half for about £4. When you get it, it will weigh a little less because she will have removed the cardboard before posting, but you can get about 4 pounds in a parcel for £8 postage. You do get quite a lot of fabric, most pieces will be 11" x 9" or larger and I usually get about 15 plus pieces at least, for each pound, as they were fabric samples they will blend together nicely. She also sells fabric by the yard which is under £4, and will fit in at least 8 yards for your postage, so you can see it can work out much cheaper. I haven't had any problems buying from the US and would recommend it.
  • Thanks gemsmember - I'm on my way now to look :)

The only problem may be the shape of the pieces that you need to cut. You may find that some strips need to be long, maybe the straps, or the piece that goes around the bag, so 1/2 metre would have been 100cm wide x 50cm. It is usually best to look at the pattern pieces before purchasing the fabric, in case you do need one long length rather than 2 half pieces. Hopefully you will have enough, even if you have to join the strap etc. as most patterns will give the requirements larger than you actually need
  • Thank you everyone for your comments about my Morsbags. I have my own 'pod', which means that every bag I make goes on a national tally. To date, since Morsbags started in 2007, over 60,000 bags have been made and given away, saving 30,293,500 plastic bags being used in the world! Makes a difference, one bag at a time.
