Irishgirl; Wow, your dress is lovely. You made it in double quick time as well.

I didn't use this tutorial when I made DD's shirred dress but I did similar. I actually used wof and shirred that then stitched it together. It's not a flowy dress though so if I was to make another, or one for myself, I would use extra fabric. I just need to learn how to cut straight now :)

    What's wof?

Welcome to the thread! Look forward to seeing what you make. :)

If you think its going to be too small could you perhaps add a coordinating border round the main fabric to make it bigger before you sew it together. Hope you get it sorted.

Wow that impressive! Looks like it fits perfectly. :T

Has anyone used this shirred maxi dress tutorial ? Looks quite easy so was maybe going to try it as Ive had shirring elastic in the house for months and it remains unused.

wof= width of fabric. Sorry for not being clear :o. How weird that your machine won't sew shirring elastic hmo. Have you asked the manufacturers for advice? It's frustrating when you can't do what you want to do on your machine isn't it? Hopefully you can do it on your DD's machine though. Then you can shirr away to your hearts content.
I was looking at double needles earlier. Some really cool stuff you can do with them isn't it? I thought I would be unable to use them but apparently you only need one bobbin thread because the needles are slightly different lengths. I may have to investigate this option :). Lots of pretties :D

Did you hand wind the shirring elastic onto the bobbin unstretched ? Normal cotton in the needle. Largest zigzag stitch and alter the tension.

I haven't sown shirring elastic for a while but it wasn't a problem in my top loading bobbin. Maybe some of the above ideas may help.

Found this Shirring Tips and Tricks video on you tube.

danemi :j thank you for that great link I too have saved it :D

Pootle :DThank you for the shiring dress video, I too have had some shiring elastic since last summer to make a dress and this year I will :rotfl: as it looks so easy :D

I have had a phone call from my mum she has booked my craft stall place for Aug bank holiday and she has said to make some small bits (phone holder, glasses cases and make-up bags) as she said the lady she goes to every month for her beauty treatments liked her bag I made and said she will sell them in her shop :D
I find I sell more at my mum's than I do here :rotfl:

My DGD is coming over tomorrow with her dad so I have to finish her No sew tutu :o
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time :) and Love sewing :)

    Evening all
Been lurking for a while and loving all your makes. Got me dusting off the sewing machine and have made a few things. I really like Sew Hip magazine and have made some nice stuff from there but I've been making a bag and realised after I cut out all the bits and started sewing it together that the flap for the bag must be too small. I'm gutted, I have us some lovely fabric and now I've wasted some. I think I could work out a bigger flap but I've wasted the lovely fabric

Can you add a strip of contrasting fabric?

Before you get really annoyed with it walk away, have a good scream, stamp your feet, breath and then take a look at it with fresh eyes.
