I'd love to try one of the bags and have the pattern but have never put in a zip before! Is it as fiddly as I imagine it will be?

Not at all, you do need to have a zipper foot on the sewing machine though so you can sew close to the zip's teeth, give it a go its not as scary as you might think!

Hi everyone. I'd love to join your sewing thread. I bought my machine last year so I'm still learning. I'm really enjoying reading and seeing all your projects. I made a Tilda bunny from the Easter book for my sister and will try to get it on here for you to see. That might take a while as I'm rubbish at this sort of thing.
I haven't read the thread all the way through yet so if I repeat anything that has already been suggested please forgive me.
For beginners - peg bag. Take a childs shirt (size depending on how big you want your peg bag), turn inside out and sew along the bottom. Turn right way out and put hanger back in. Simple as that.

I made these reversible bags for Christmas pressies and they turned out really nice http://www.ehow.com/video_4438348_introduction-making-own-tote-bag.html
it's the start off a series of step by step videos to making a tote bag which I found useful as a beginner - and yes, I did sew the handles inside the bag on my first go.
ehow.com is a good source of information for showing how to put in zips, quilting etc.

Looking forward to sharing ideas with you.
Flossie - Hi and welcome. I love the idea of your kids shirt peg bag!!
I have been planning to make some peg bags with my spare bits of material, I'm not sure where to buy kids coat hangers though, not the black plastic ones but some nice ones, perhaps I'll have a look in mothercare next week - any other suggestions as to where to look (cheap ones too :) )

  • busy sewing today as i'm snowed in, finally getting around to making bed quilted bed covers for my 2 girls, i bought 6 fat quarters last september from fabric closet on etsy, the white is extra wide cotton sheeting i got cheap on the net, i still have a lot to do, going to put a bright pink border on, do the wadding/tacking/etc i think i'm going to hand sew each square with pink embroidery thread then bind it..lots to do..phew! in case anyone is interested i cut the square to 5.5inch square and the white is 5.5 by 3inch and long strips of 3inch.

i know it looks a bit wrinkled! i do iron everything first but as it gets bigger i scrunch it up while sewing so it doesn't drag on the floor!
i'll post again when completed...might be some time though!

hello everyone, gosh you've all been so busy! i've been away as my nan died, and wow there is a lot to catch up on!
that's good, it'll keep me busy. i've just sat and read from page 25 to 35, and am exhausted! but very inspired! i'll have to catch up on the rest later.

thanks everyone for telling me i should finish that left over xmas stocking (stopped as nan got ill), and i'm glad i did.
It's patchwork using fabric scraps, Ikea samples and an old gingham shirt. I quilted the patches straight onto the
wadding & inside (contracted 2 of Kristies Homemade steps into 1), then added the backing, which made it a very quick make indeed.

below is a little embroidery of my own design. i sewed the words
whilst drinking wine with friends, so they get wonkier, but at least the sentiment was heartfelt!

positiveleymummy - your quilt is fantastic, it will be amazing once done!
I think you are so brave, I cant even contemplate starting such a big project as I get lost halfway through and I get bored very easily.
