Mine are so ancient its hard to tell, but there was a write up about some machines in the SEW mag in February.
They recommend the Singer 1507, for absolute beginners.
It does all the basics, buttonhole, 7 stitches, etc with convertable free arm. Its £99.

My first machines were singers. Then I went on to New Homes/Combi's and Janome is part of them now.
I have a Silver Viscount now. Silver are a good one.
They are based in Kettering. *(They actually service my machines, even those that are not thier own). My spare is at my BF's so I can sew where ever I am).

But they are pricier machines now I think.

I am sure there will be others around.
Best thing is to go into the shops and get a demonstration of them in progress, and see if you can have a go too.
    Good luck

the singer one is for sale on the craft chanel on tv but it has a needle threader on it, they said it was put on that model just for them by singer.

its about £115 but is on flexipay which means you can buy and pay over 3 months interest free

I have a Brother MS6NT and love it but its more expensive.

I would just do a running stitch - dont make the stitches to small incase you have to unpick your sewing.

My machine is ancient & I would use 3.5/4 but at the moment, the faster I sew, the smaller the stitch is lol! I must get through my "to do " list so that I can get it serviced!

Do I want a needle threader? I'm quite good at threading needles...

Thanks for the advice, it's given me somewhere to start looking. I was looking at the Tesco ones, it seems the good ones are out of stock. Quick question - when it says not suitable for heavy upholstery does that mean it wont do denim and will it do a couple of layers of cotton? I hope you don't mind me asking all these basic questions :o

Had a quick look and I cannot see why it would not be of any use.

On your other question, normal denim is usually ok on the smaller things, but the options of the heavier fabrics, upholstery is more like the thick taperstry then it is the curtaining, you and I would normally be buying.
You wouldnt be able to sew leather very well though. But few really do, unless your able to get a good supply of hides! and thats not easy.

Look on the brothers site and also on price comparison sites to see the kind of prices they go at, and then if you dont go for the one on Ebay, how about going through Quidco, and seeing if you can get a better deal on things.

I am out and about today, talking to the jobcentre and business links about the possibility of my being able to start a business with my sewing, (knowing that my Cervical Sponydlosis can make me out of action for days sometimes etc etc.). Hence I am not employable!

have a good day, and hope those that are sewing manage it, and those who have to do lists can strike a few things off of them.
