Hi All, Need some help please. Ive been wanting to embark on a quilt for some time and finally found the fabric I want to make it with (Im also going to make hexies with it so I can make patchwork cushions for a different room). The range is here (I love it!! - particularly the blue stuff with the writing thats right at the bottom of the page but Im not overly keen on the cocoa stuff.)

My question is that Ive decided to buy a jelly roll to make it easier for myself but how do I know which of the fabrics I actually get in the jelly roll? Its obvious there are different colours from looking at it but is it likely to be a mixture of the whole range or just some of them? Anyone have any experience with jelly rolls that can help me please?:o...or would I be better buying a layer cake?
This is said jelly roll..... (as you can see it doesnt really give any indication of whats going to be in it - am I being really thick??)
The Moda ones are one full width strip of each fabric in the range. Around 40 strips
If you buy elsewhere then you will need to ask as some shops cut them themselves.
What pattern have you gone for?0 -
Have been rummaging around in the chest of drawers upstairs and have found a lovely piece of paisley needlecord and am going to see if it will make a bag, and maybe even make DGD a skirt out of it as well. One thing for us and one to sell. (I have been to check up on my bags and they both have bids on them already, so I am pleased as punch, with 6 days to go, I shall at least not be a nervous wreck waiting till the last 30 mins to see if anyone at all was interested!). I just hope that my sciatica that is plaguing me this week, last 10 days will settle or I wont be doing much sewing at all. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0

Thanks. I havent gone for a pattern yet. I was just going to buy them then work it out from there. Im thinking a very plain one with squares on it here and there so might get the charm packs instead (although cant find them in this range in the UK at the moment). I honestly never realised how daunting quilting is. I feel like Im being really thick as despite reading and reading loads of different things and asking for help on here I still feel completely clueless about how you actually make one.0 -
:j good news on the bags Mooloo :j
Well Ive had the stiches out of my hand and will now be able to start on the lovely fabric Ive broughtI still have another week off work and was told maybe 3 more yet as I cann't do heavy work and being a cleaner at a childrens play and party center it will be too much too soon

Pootle this is also a great beginners book despite the title. The Lady in my local quilt shop actually recomended it for me as a great book for beginners.
It goes through quick methods for piecing together quilts like strip piecing, shows you how to make various simple blocks and gives you ideas on how to mix & match the blocks. There is also a short section at the back for finishing your quilt. I found it really useful.
I was poorly last week (as per usual for half term lol) so didn't get to do any sewing (or anything else for that matter) and have so much housework and work stuff to catch up on now- hopefully my 3rd Niece will have her blanket finished at the weekend.
did anyone else notice that pig flying past?? lol:rotfl:0 -

I have her link on my favourites. As one of these days I want to try to do some quilting. Possibly will make a small one for the new baby due in May. Just waiting to see what the colour scheme of the new nursery is going to be. (they keep changing thier minds, which is awkward as I have to recover the moses basket yet).
Just waiting for DGD to go to bed, then I can spread my material out on the floor, on my cutting board and get my next project cut out.
I did tell myself I would make one item a day, but this week has been a non starter with the sciatica. But I think I will just have to "fight it" or nothing will get done.
I hope the hand mends well Hart:D and that you can do some creating with the stash of fabrics you no doubt have.
( I have masses of fabric in every room of the house at the moment. Very naughtily I keep buying remnents off of ebay!).When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

Gosh 189! I would never keep up with it! Alas the bank balance is now pitifully low, due to bailing out my twins too much! So I must stop buying for now, and get selling! So that means turning all the fabric I have into something saleable. Or maybe even put some of the fabric up for sale! mmm That may be an idea! But to part with fabric is so difficult.
I remember when I gave up my sewing business, and all my stock, in 2004, and gave it to the local University fashion department. It took me two trips in my people carrier, (with out the seats in)! I only kept a small chest of fabrics as I never thought I would be sewing again! Ha, I probably have just as much fabric again! So many times I see things, in charity shops, or on ebay, or the market and I think I could make this or that, buy the fabric then it gets put away, for when i get around to it!!:o
Now that I have plucked up the courage to sell on ebay perhaps I will now work my way through the stash.:DWhen I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
:rotfl: I have to just watch the fabric as like you it can realy get out of control :rotfl: I used to have a dining room :rotfl:
I have to list loads of stuff on ebay too, my DD had a clear out, mostly clothes she has never worn
I too was thinking shall I sell some fabric but trouble is what to sell as I will hate parting with any I have :rotfl:Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a timeand Love sewing
