I bought the needles from Aldi a couple of years ago, only cost about £4.99 :D

Me too! I also got a large ball of chunky wool at the same time!

Update on 'The Bag Making Bible' by Lisa Lam - I ordered this around the first week in October but the delivery estimate was January 2011! I let the order stand though as I have plenty of other stuff to be going on with.

Just had an email from Amazon and they say it should now be delivered on 27 November, so looks like it is back in stock again at £7.50. It had a few good recommendations on here so I'm looking forward to getting it. :)

Its brilliant! I couldnt put it down when I first got it and think Ive now read it twice from cover to cover. I also love the fact that everything she refers to in her book is sold in her shop.
  • Hello all,

I haven't read all through this thread yet, but I have a sewing machine problem, if this isn't the best place to post this, please could someone kindly point me in the right direction.

Anyway, I am a novice sewer; I have inherited a lovely old machine and just had it serviced, but when I started trying to use it yesterday the thread keeps knotting itself, it seems to be within the bobbin area, after a few stitches.

Sometime it sews ok, but other times, it does this knotting.

I have only been using scrap pieces of material so I dont think that the material is the issue, and also as i've just has it serviced I dont think its the machine... is it me?

Any advice would be great, I am a bit of an impatient thing, so I just want to get going, while I am feeling motivated.

    Thanks

Danielley as you are only just starting out with the machine and it has only just been serviced, I would get the manual out and first check the following:

Does the thread you are using have any little lumps or knots in it? Sometimes cheap thread can have little thicker or thinner bits that upset the machine.

Is the machine threaded properly? I would take the thread out, check the manual and go throught the steps to make sure.

Is the bobbin evenly wound with no loops?

Have you put the bobbin in correctly? - again I would look at the manual to make sure.

Also check that the needle is tightly screwed in.

I hope this does not sound too simplistic, but before starting on tension I would look at these first, given that you have just had the machine serviced.

Let us know how you get on!
  • and maybe change the needle
  • have you threaded the machine correctly - very easy to miss a bit

It could be the thread. In the first instance I would be inclined to change your needle and use a good quality thread and see if that helps.

    Hello Ladies
I'm not really a sew-er. I struggle to thread needsle due to poor eyesight. However, I'd like to add a bit of felt to some of the cards I make and was wondering where was the best place to buy felt.
    Any ideas gratefully received
