Bought my first sewing machine yesterday, managed to get the hang of the basics! Just wondering what everyone would suggest to get as a 'starter kit' don't want to spend loads but want enough so I can get started on easy projects.
ThanksMum, OU student and a newbie here!

i think the plastic tray sewing kits are great - especially the one with all the different rainbow of threads with pre-wound bobbins - not enough for massive projects but great when needing to match a thread colour in a hurry.:)
? has anyone bought the plastic sewing box before? it looks like a small tool box but at £6.99 it isnt cheap. so i'm wondering it its good quality?
 has anyone bought one of the sewing machines before?? from Silvercrest. it's £59.99 and has 33 stitches, backwards 4 step button hole. Which makes it on a level with my 15year old ELNA, i've less stitches but have a 2 step buttonhole...
i'm thinking it might be good for my mum... her machine is from the 1950s and whilst a great colour, that's about all that can be said... it doesnt even go backwards!! we've looked at the fancy embroidery ones and whilst she's intrigued she's also scared, and i need to be carefull i wouldnt be buying her one that i'd secretly like!!
I have one of these and its great and really simple to use. needs to be for me .lol.Cross Stitch Challenge Member Number 20

How about trying the Cath Kidston book, SEW! It comes with the material and buttons you need to make yourself a lovely bag and it contains lots of sewing ideas! Good luck0

I can't remember the model but it's a Brother reduced from £159 to £109! I've managed to sew a couple of lines onto an old pillowcase so far lol
I'll have a look at Sew! Didn't realise it came with all the bits you need to get started. I've picked up a couple of pieces of fabric from Ikea today, not sure what I'm going to make yet!!Mum, OU student and a newbie here!

Hi
I bought this from the book people and they said due to stock issues the pattern may come seperately a month later nothing has arrived. What exactly did yours come with if you dont mind me asking so I can argue the point with the book people? It was heavily reduced and was only £4.99 but still its no use without the patterns or fabric.
Thanks x0 -

Congrats on getting a machine. Give it a month and you will be obsessed!!
I would definately recommend that you go for cheap fabrics in the outset or maybe buy a cheap duvet cover (or use an old one) just till you get yourself used to your machine etc.
Crayon Rolls are always a good beginners thing to start out with. Also morsebags are good too. You can get absolutely hundreds of really good step by step tutorials online. Looking forward to seeing what you make!! (you too LJM) :)x0 -
How i love the sewing room, alas i have no grand children to make all the lovely childrens things. I am moving into a one bedroom bungalow from a three bedroom house with my oh, and i am busy making cushions for our new suite and cutting curtins down to fit the smaller windows in our new place. Going to make cushion pads for the kitchen chairs, a table cloth and matching napkins and curtins with a gingham theme.Still working on the rag rug i mentioned in a past thread. I am so excited, i love moving house.0
