I'd love to be able to help you ladies with picking a machine but I have not looked at any new ones recently and I was lucky to be able to pay a bit more for the Janome I bought two years ago.
I've just checked Which for reviews and their current best buy is a Brother, but they have it listed at just under £200 so obviously not a starter machine.
When starting out you certainly don't need lots of stitches (if ever!), but there really is no substitute for trying them out for yourself and getting a 'feel' for what suits you.
I do understand that you must be desperate to get your hands on one and get started though!0 -
Lol I'm guessing its a bad idea to buy one from Argos then
I just mean there are better places with better customer service and better value but it's a machine at the end of the day. If you can I'd buy from www.sewingmachinesdirect.co.uk you will not find better customer service anywhere and they are knowledgeable and will help you if you have any difficulties with the machine. You also get loads of threads and scissors included so no additional expense there. However a choice between not getting a machine and an Argos machine, well hey any machine will do!
As an economy option you could look on Ebay for an old machine. I'm talking really old. You could get a lovely Singer 99k or 201 for £50 or less and you'll have a machine that'll sew almost anything and not break down. The only thing is you'd have to get someone to check the electrics, not an electrician but someone who knows a little bit because the electrics are basic but would be old. Here is the type of machine I mean.
Sorry persuasion over. You can go to Argos now. :rotfl:0 -
hi everyone, just a quick post to say hi! lovely makes and great on the craft stall! i'm still under the weather, but my OH is landing tomorow at midnight so that's a nice thing.
i just logged into ebay to find i'd won 6 of the 9 bids i made on fabric... oopsie! didnt expect to get anywhere near that many as i didnt bid very high (max £2.30 for 1/2 yard). then the seller offered me to buy one i didnt win at the max price i bid, 50p less than the winner! how could i refuse? so overall i'm surprised but very pleased. hopefully the colours will come together and i'll be able to start on a civil war colours sampler quiltThanks, the cupboard has been a long time coming, my material was in bags on the floor before. The fabric for freecycle is still sitting in the kitchen, pending one last look through before I offer it. I know there be something I wish I hadn't got rid of, but there are things I've had for years and never used!
Sarah:Dhi sarahjovi, well, i'm only up the road in sunny kettering, and my mum in towcester wants to start sewing hearts ect... so if freecycle isnt a go, just let me know!!:D

Your quilt's coming along pennib, how many patches do you need to make?0

Hi Emzy, how exciting that you got your machine. When I got mine earlier this year it was like Xmas that had come early!! My only advice would be to buy some interfacing and wadding. Im not sure what you want to make but Ive always found that pretty much everything Ive made needs them (particularly medium weight interfacing). Also, as others have said, some bobbins and some good thread (you can get cheap stuff but TBH it doesnt sew properly and can damage your machine.) I find that moon thread is a happy medium although I always try and get gutterman or equivalent when I can. You can get some good deals on ebay. Happy sewing and looking forward to seeing all your lovely projects very soon!!0

I have used up all my material so have to stop with what I have made now. I am peicing them together in 6 longways (not sure how many there will be width ways yet).0 -

It's a real company, been there for years. I used to pass Coopers on my way to school. My mum was a dressmaker doing piecework from home and they used to service her machines. Coopers have been going for decades.
I'm going up to Finchley when I get a car and I hope to pick up a dress form. I don't know anyone who does decent one cheaper.
I would highly recommend them. Although my experience of them is as someone who used to live locally. Chillout5892
