    Fabulous!!

I'm a novice, got sewing briefly at school quite a few years ago, but got a sewing machine for Christmas, and can't wait to get started!

I'm hoping to recycle fabric - kids and my old clothes for example, and maybe charity shop finds. All depending on how well I get on with the machine of course, but hopefully this thread will both support and inspire :D

Glad you made it over here Trow, since it was your suggestion to start a thread about sewing:D

That's a great idea about recycling fabric, it's very very popular in the USA at the moment where they call it "upcycle":D

I was bought a brand new spanking Brother XL 2620 for Christmas - as a surprise gift! I now need to know what the heck to do with it! I can thread it and can wind a bobbin. I cannot sew straight yet haha! So I'm in to learn a few things!

Snap! I had the same machine for Christmas and am at about the same level as you by the sound of things! It took me a couple of hours to fathom how to thread it and wind the bobbin! I need to learn fast tho, Im meant to be making a costume out of 2 throws for New Years Eve! Wish me luck!

I've got the same 2 books:D I love them, so far I've made an angel (minus the wings:D) a dressing gown angel for my friends bathroom and some scented strawberries. I love these, they smell gorgeous and take no time to make. I Just added a few drops of strawberry oil(the stuff used for candle making) I sit or hang them from radiators and they smell divine and look so pretty:D

In the Tilda book she puts a few of theses strawberries in jars, I would love to receive something like that as a gift, would be great for xmas. Maybe change it to a cranberry and add a christmas scented oil, just a thought :0)

Please may I join. Have two sewing machines (though one needs a new motor - I have had it since I was 7 as I broke the fisher price one I was bought) but a a pretty basic sewer atm. Have loads of fabric as I get it from he local charity shop but absolutly no idea what to make with it all. Oh my mum is currently try a knicker pattern for me as I could not get my head around it.
So ideas for books patterns and the odd boot up the behind all welcome. (altering clothes to look quirky or fit will all be attempted as I have now given up getting new clothes to fit - too depressing so sticking with charity shop finds)

Today I am going to make a door chicken from a pattern in Prima. I have wanted to make one of these for ages but have just never made the time so today is the day I give it a proper shot, if it works I will try and post a picture!

Am looking for some inspiration. I am going to be making a gardening hamper for Christmas 2010 and I have found some gorgeous garden fabric. I am a sewing novice, so could anyone suggest something easy that I could make to be included as I'd love to use this fabric?
  • ooh can i join too! i love my sewing machine, i'm still learning, but i made some bags yonks ago (which is on a thread over a year ago) which i have just started selling, i also made a quilted table runner (OMG it was like 20 hours work..so next time i'll stick to a simpler pattern!) then as i couldnt find the kids stockings a week before christmas i made some with some christmas fabric i bought in a sale about 2 years ago. i also make little purses, which can also be ipod holders, mobile phone holders or even change the size for make up bags or pencil cases etc. its a great way to use up scraps. also i thought about making little stuffed love hearts (shabby chic style)..i want next christmas to be all handmade stuff, so i'm going to start very very early (like next month!) now is the time to get half price christmas fabric by the way:j
    totally a tog!:D
