Were they a different make from your usual ones? Some needles are just rubbish.
were you using the correct type of needle, i.e. size, ballpoint, leather, denim etc? also could your needles have been pulled out of line, or are you sewing over pins?
also the tension on your threads can also affect the needles and break them down by the eye of the needle usually. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

thats about the adverage these days, for the dress cottons etc, but they can be alot more expensive than that when you start to buy curtaining etc. I just ordered 2 metres of fabric in a local Interior design place and they set me back £76!!!
Not something I would normally pay for, but I was not thinking and ordered it without asking the price!!!
I had been looking at the prices in a different book, at £13.95 and didnt think to check the price of the next book. got a bit carried away. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

I normally pay around £10.99 or so a metre online (depending on what Im buying). I dont think £6.99 a metre is too bad. Its quite an expensive hobby that we all have!! You could always buy duvet covers or go to charity shops and see if you can find something in there if you looking for alot of fabric a bit cheaper.0 -

What type of projects are you thinking about doing?
I have used these before, good service, I ordered a couple of bundles for some quilts I am working on atm. The half yard bundles are about the same price that you would pay at Fabric Rehab/Seamstar type places for fat quarter bundles!

My local fabricland has a good selection of fabric under £5.
Other than that I have started buying duvet's & bedding at cb & cs, and also I have bought quite a few pieces of fabric at cb lately.0 -

Tamster thats a great link. Is the fabric you buy for quilting thinner than normal cotton or just the same? It looks fluffier (if that makes sense):)0 -
Pootle As far as I know there is a difference - I have seen it mentioned on my blog hopping travels. I think because quilting cotton has a lower thread count & more open weave it is not so good for dressmaking but I don't really know why.
I have used some dressmaking cottons in my current project & I can't really tell any difference between the quilting & dress cottons - but then I am only on my 4th quilting project. An "expert" may have a different opinion.
So really not sure if that helps lol!0 -
Evening all!
Gosh i havnt been on in an age! Have had so much going on its crazy! Anyhoo- I've FINALLY finished my quilt- have posted it to my blog, (drinking fabric for the ones who dont follow) let me know what you think!.
Loving the monkeys with the hair on here- and whoever said about needles breaking- make sure you are putting them in properly, if its on even a slight angle rather then straight up then it will catch on the machine more easily and break quicker, I went through a whole pack before I worked it out!.
When you first change it, lower the needle by hand first and make sure it gos right through the middle with enough space on either side so it wont get caught, and if they break when quilting then you might be pulling through the fabric to much if there is a lot of fabric make sure the weight is evenly distributed on your table so it dosnt hang and pull through whilst your sewing, again making needle breakages more likely.
Cloudberry45 I have a whole list of online fabric shops on my blog so come have a look.0 -
