I want to make some cushions with removable covers. I think that's going to mean putting in a zip which I still haven't plucked up the courage to try yet.
I found some cushion tutorials online but get bogged down in the instructions.
Does anyone know of a simple foolproof tutorial? And an alternative to zips (not buttons!)
    Thanks xx

Vicki i saw one for a envelope finish (a bit like pillowcases are done) but i can't remember where i'll try and find it.

Love the bunting tete i eventually made some for my little girls room and was amazed how quick and easy it is.

Not so rich those bags are great well done. the shoe one looks really effective.

Pennib clever you not using a pattern for your applique it will look stunning when its finished.

I have made a little tote bag today which has turned out quite well.

Forgot to say that everyones bags are lovely. I still haven't made a bag yet but keep meaning to. I have a friend who would love one so I should really.

The bunting is fab too, great mix of fabrics.

This has to be the easiest pillowcase ever which is essentially what I did when I made mine (remember the ones on my bed?). I did make it slightly harder by cutting the fabric to add the stripe of different fabric to one side but essentially that how they were done. Having said that having added buttons and zips now I can say they are nothing to be scared of. What I have learnt is after paying £2.50 for one zip in John Lewis I can buy 10 the exact same size & colour for only £3.19 inc P&P on Ebay. I've just paid 40 pence each for buttons in my local shop so I'm now going to look on Ebay for cheap buttons too.
  • I make cushion covers more or less the same way as Shirlgirl's instructions. I cut the front cover to the size I want. Then the back is cut in two halves the same length as the front but cut into two widthwise. You need to add enough onto each of the two pieces for it to overlap at the back and allow extra for neatening the edge.

To sew it up neaten the raw edges of the back pieces where they will overlap. Lay the front down and put the two backs on top so that the two pieces overlap in the centre. Pin together and stitch all round the outside edges. Then you can turn through, clipping the corners first if you need to, to get neater corners. The cushion pad can just be inserted in from the back. I would allow for at least 2 inches overlap at the back so the cushion pad doesn't show.

I also agree that once you have the knack of it zips are ok to put in. On a cushion it is usually easier to sew the zip in before you sew around the outside edges. Then you can put the zip in with the fabric flat.

    Hi All

    Really nice makes everyone.
Danemi, where are your pics? :)

Can anyone help me please. I just bought 3 Tilda books so am going to give making some of the dolls a try at some point.
Anyone have any recommendations as to where to buy flesh coloured fabric?(I think its supposed to be linen) Ive found one on ebay but it seems really expensive.

Also, Im in the process of making a bag (surprise, surprise). It say to use fuseable fleece but I only have sew in fleece. Should I sew that to the outer material instead of ironing and then follow the instructions or should I sandwich it together and sew at the same time as Im sewing my outer and lining fabric together?

    Thanks. x

I have just spent a week reading this thread!

Have been really inspired by you and gained lots of useful bookmarks along the way so thanks!
In fact I was so inspired that I've just bought a sewing machine! I haven't sewed anything for about ten years so I have no idea what I'm doing!

I've got some kwik sew patterns and will start with a tunic and skirt. No zips but the jersey material for the tunic might be tough to sew so any tips welcome! I've also grabbed some things from charity shops to practice on and hope to do some up cycling too.
