xxvickixx; I love getting home made gifts (dont get enough in my opinion!) and I give them as well.....from jam/wine/cross stitch etc etc, and they are all appreciated. It must be horrible to give something that's had a lot of time and effort gone into it and its not received well :0(

danemi1; How about getting some books from the library on applique work. In the old days you had to tuck everything under but nowadays ya can just raw edge (much quicker and easier) I think you are doing excellent and if I compare my work with somebody elses I would give up so agree with 23rdspiral there. We all have our own style and everyone's makes are all brilliant!

sjs6089; Hello and welcome. I didn't want to read and run, sorry I can't help with your
mathematical problem (always bottom in maths) otherwise you would end up with it stretching out your front door or enough for a dishcloth!!!
Sure someone will come along soon with the knowledge of workings out.

    Hiya everyone,

Sorry i have been AWOL for a while. My little brother gets married on saturday and have been up to my eyes in making order of services, name cards, menu cards, favour boxes and embellishments, ribbon decor for church pews, ribbon roses hairclips for the flower girls and lots lots more...

Anyway i have made some bags which a firend asked me to make for her as she sells Usbourne books. you may have seen the pics on my blog but if not ..

I also have orders for 5 handbags at the moment so i'm quite excited.

Is anyone going to the creative crafts and sewsing show at Manchester in September? i am hoping to get tickets this week. Does anyone happen to know the discount code? it says tickets are £5.50 with a discount code but i don't have one so wondered if anyone else knows what it is.

Right i'm off to read the last 15 pages of this thread that i am behind on!!!

I am not very good at the maths side. What I used to do was mark out the width of fabric with greaseproof paper.
Lay out the pattern peaces on it, as best you can to fit, following the fact that you need certain things on the fold, and others on the straight of grain etc.
Then you can measure how much they take up in the length.
Its easier to do then it sounds sorry.
    Hope this is a help.
    Mooloo :D

You need to look at the pattern layout.

1st Check if there any pieces cut on the fold if so make sure they aren't wider than 55cm at the widest point.

2nd I'd lay the piece out on the floor the way they have to go, straight of grain, on a fold etc making sure you don't exceed the 55cm folded material, then measure the amount needed. Not very scientific but hey ho.
You could always use a sheet folded to 55cm and lay the pieces out on that then measure.

I'm not sure there would be a way to calculate, probably is but I don't know it and I still work in yards and inches. :o
