Hi all,
I have been lurking for ages, keping track of all your lovely makes and saving piles of things to make when I get time.
I had a little go today, was so excited. Thought I'd start with something that I thought would be really simple. It wasn't lol. Don't know if it's me being stupid or the instructions. Tried this http://www.allaboutyou.com/craft/Make-a-pretty-knitting-bag/v1 thought it was as simple as you can get but I couldn't get my fabric right. Had rough edges under the bit where the handles go. Really didn't want to use wadding or anything as I haven't got any. Does anyone have an suggestions on a simple pattern I could use to make my first item?
Really am in awe of all your makes and would love to get going in the sewing world.
Thanks in advance. xx
Hi Wam :j, Did you hem 1cm on the top before before you then folded over again to accommodate handles? Thats the only thing I can think of as to why you would have rough edges. Do you want to make a bag for a specific purpose or just to get you started? If its just so you can practice you could try making a morsebag or a grocery bag (there are loads on this link which should be quite easy.)
Bunny - Ive never even heard of a ruffler foot before. Looks like it will make things much easier!!
Pixiepops - Welcome to the thread!
Pennib - Wow! Thats amazing!!
Vicki - You have been busy! Love your blind.
Im hopefully going to do some sewing today. Not sure what Im going to make yet but finally have a day off with no plans so will need to attempt something! x0 -
Hi everyone

I feel like I have been away forever, you have all been so busy
At long last my blue and white patchwork quilt is finished and on my bed
I didn't cheat on this one, all the squares were rotary cut and I hand sewed the binding onto the back of the quilt (the red and black quilt I did were all pre-cut squares
)
It's not perfect but Im happy with it
Getting myself sorted 1 day/1thing at a time

WOW Hart - that is FABULOUS - well done!
Would love to get on with some patchwork but my machine just won't play ball.
Feed dogs seem to have stopped moving and I can't find anything in the book about them.
It is a Lervia machine and only been used for about 6 months.
I have contacted the agents in this country, but they can't suggest anything other than send it back with the receipt for a new one.
Unfortunately I don't have the receipt.
It was a cheap machine from Llidl, so not worth spending any money on.
I'm hoping that someone I know who teaches Needlework will have a look at it.
So frustrating, as my OH is away so I hoping to get lots of sewing done.

danemi1; No it didn't take long to do, the background is flicked paint from a toothbrush on an old sheet:rotfl:
xxvickixx; in real life the cherry blossom has a sheen to it, and that yellow isnt a stain but the sunset which didnt photo very well.
pixepops; Welcome take up a chair while we all squash up and join the merry band. Good on your g'ma teaching you sewing, once started you will get addicted to it :T wish sewing was taught in schools again, but I had a dragon on a teacher wonder she didnt put me off for life
Cuddles;
:( to your sewing machine, sorry can't help as when mine goes wrong I sling it at hubs and he has to fix it
Bunny; never heard of a ruffler foot either.....will have to look into that.
Pootleflump; good advice on bags and those links are handy. I made a very simple bag to carry around based on a te*co bag....went wrong but bodged it...hasn't fallen apart yet!
Hart44; That quilt is gorgeous, bet you're dead chuffed with yourself! :THow long did it take? Have ordered some fat quarters to do something with, but a lot smaller. You can get carried away with fabric

Hi
Long time lurker here. Can anyone help me with a query I have about curtains please? I bought some curtains a long time ago and they are the standard curtain type, didn't realsie at the time and I actually wanted either tab top or curtains with rings in (if that makes sense). Anyway, I have come up with the idea to buy some eyelets myself and turn them into curtains with ring top, but my query is, I have seen that you can get special tape with the holes already in and wondered whether or not I needed to take the tape off that is already there and replace with the special 'eyelet' tape or can I just use the tape that is on and make my own holes?
Any advice accepted as I don't know what to do.
Thanks0 -
Hart44 - That quilt is so nice!
And thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I have made a dress previously so decided to throw myself in at the deep end, with my aunt and grandmother's encouragement. So looks like I'm working with chiffon. :SA-Z Challenge: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Good Luck to all who comp!

My friend has looked at my machine.
It seems there are multiple faults
Feed dogs not working properly after winding bobbin.
Reverse direction control causes thread to come out of slot in shuttle case, so tension goes all to hell.
Top thread is sometimes managing to come out of Upper Thread Guide after using Reverse Direction control, so tension goes all to hell.
I have managed to do a small amount of sewing without using the Reverse, so it seems that is the problem.
I was actually getting paranoid, thinking it was me.

Thanks Pootleflump,
It was just to have something to make really with things that I have already got. The pattern said to leave a 15cm gap when sewing the sides but when you add the 1cm at the top and the 3cm to hold the handle it doesn't add up to 15cm and so there was a gap and I cant figure out how to hem this gap properly. The links that you gave me however are fab and do look easy enough. When I go back to work tomorrow I may well have a go at making one. I'm normally quite good at adjusting things that I don't understand but this has got my totally flumuxed. Will keep trying as I am determined to make one as the pattern lol I am very stubborn but would be nice to whip something quick and easy up in the mean time. So thanks for the links. xWould love to earn an extra £40 a Week. Trying to find ways to :-)0 -
