Sorry to intrude on this thread but it seems to be where all the wise sewers hang out!
I bought a cheap denim jacket from Primark and wanted to make it look a little different as I have seen so many people wearing it. I bought some lace edging and would like to attach some along the cuffs and along the bottom of the jacket. I just wondered what would be the best way to do this as I don't have sewing machine and think hand sewing it on wouldn't be an option because it's two thick layers of denim. Could I use the iron-on hemming? does it go see through once it's been ironed over as the lace has holes in it as part of the pattern.
Kind regards and thanks in advance!0 -
Aww Thank you, I filled the doorstop with polyester filling and made some cotton bags of rice and put them in the middle, its a little light though so I will put more in next time. My quilting teacher brough one in someone had bought her, it was a tiny one to use as a pin cushion...so cute!
Heres a basic pattern

Hi I saw people going mad for those jackets in Primark today.
If it was me I would hand sew it, it won't be easy but that bondaweb stuff is not that brilliant in my opinion. I have used fabric glue in the past with little sucess too. Perhaps you can bondaweb it on (but be careful not to melt the lace, put a cloth over it) and then tack it with a few stitches here and there to secure it rather than sewing the whole lot on. Get a strong needle or even a curved upholstery needle (these often come in the sewing sets you get in supermarkets) and a thimble is a must! Let us know how you get on and perhaps let us see a picture.
If you dont want to do all that why not just hand sew a couple of lace corsages using a simple gathering stitch to make a flower shape and attach them to safety pins and pin them on the jacket? Just a thought. You can stand there and agonize........

no it doesnt go see-thru, but what colour is the lace? if its the same colour, then the iron-on webbing will just merge into the background, and shouldnt be too noticeable (but iron from the wrong side, otherwise the iron will stick to the webbing thru the holes).
hand sewing shouldnt be the that difficult. you wouldnt need to go thru both layers, just lightly stitch thru the top layer, picking up single threads as you go - although this would be alot more time consuming than using wonderweb
personally tho, i find the iron-on hemming stuff doesnt hold that well, i much prefer steam-a-seam, but that doesnt give such a pliable finish, but then again cuffs and hems on denim jackets are quite thick anyway. also steam-a-seam can be lightly fixed to the lace first, and if the urge so takes you, you can then snip out the holes so the denim shows thru in places

Well after posting about wishing I had a market for fabric, I remembered a market I hadn't been to for years, just a few miles away from here. OH and I decided to go and look today, and I found 2 brilliant stalls and got some real bargains :j:money:
Not sure what I'm going to make yet, but have plenty of fabric to choose from.....:pJack of all trades ... Master of none

I've got my sewing mojo back, and made my DD2 a dress today. However I've found a pattern which I bought 4 years ago(!) and never got round to making. It's for a girl aged 6 months to 4 years, and as my DD is now 5 it's no good. It hasn't been cut out, so you could trace the size you wanted and keep the original intact to make in a bigger size later. I can't find any pictures on the internet, but it's a skirt, dress and top. It's New Look 6228 and is an 'easy' pattern, so if anyone wants it to make something for their little girl I'll happily post it to you, just pm me (it's winter clothes by the way).0
