The Sewing Room

Oh well more time to visit craft shops and buy more sewing materials as long as I don't go over our baggage allowance.
Can't get back home because of the ash cloud, told my 4 kids to go and stand outside earlier, look up at the sky and blow as hard as you can for and hour. They looked at me as though I had gone mad, lol.Mortgage

Thanks for the links girls re the cutting mats, I will have a look online. I was shocked at how much they were when I first looked a while ago. I will have to cut small suff only for the minute on my dinky mat.
Genieuk ~ sorry to hear you are stuck here, that must be a pain in the neck especially with the kids, perhaps if all of us go outside and blow....:rotfl:You can stand there and agonize........

I bought a set of rotary cutter, ruler & mat from Cotton Patch with Xmas present money but it was £50ish so the A1 ones on ebay that Pootle linked seem a good deal.

I have to say the rotary cutter, ruler and mat are worth their weight in gold and I love them! The only problem is the mat can't be rolled or folded so u need somewhere to leave it flat when u r not using it, mine stays on the office floor where I do my cutting so its not in the way.....0 -
Hi all, I need some advice!
I'm completely new to sewing, got a bargain sewing machine being delivered in the coming week.
I am altering some of my clothes to allow a little extra give to double as maternity clothes. Partly through cost and partly necessity, I'm an odd size and finding maternity clothes is a nightmare.
I was planning to add some elastic panels to jeans to allow more give. Does anyone know what the best width of elastic would be and where is cheapest to get it?
Thanks x0 -

Thanks, that's brilliant! It seemed quite daunting at first but those links have made it seem quite easy, I might be overestimating my handiness though. x0 -
Advice please!
When making bags and you leave an opening for turning main fabric through lining do you hand stitch the opening shut and if so, how? Im not sure if there is a certain hand stitch I should be using. Ive been just turning fabric under and stitiching whole lot with my machine but reckon would look much better if I just leave a little gap then hand stitch. Help?!!0 -
To close a gap by hand stitching, I use Ladder Stitch

I use slip stitch as it is invisble
This is quite a good demonstration although it is illustrated on a hem
http://www.monkeysee.com/play/2149-sewing-the-slip-stitch
and this is a written description (it is a very simple stitch)

Can anyone please recommend me an online haberdashery supplier? I keep finding that I'm starting jobs but can't finish them because I never seem to have all the bits. Today I tried to make a carrier bag holder but then realised I had no elastic, lol. Then I tried to make a jewellery roll and had no piping.
Loving all the posts on what you are all sewing. I'm itching to get going but keep being 'helped' by a 5 year old. TodayI let him have a go with a needle and thread, I must be mad! He loved it and made himself a tooth fairy bagCos I don't shine if you don't shine.0
