Thanks! I was surprised it fitted but we made a few adjustments to the original pattern. It was this one I used (option E.) Am going to try and make another one at home without any help as I still find that patterns baffle me so want to get more practice.
Thanks for comments everyone. Wasnt sure if it was good or not!

I think once I had made one under instruction I would be keen to get loads made up in different colours. Or perhaps you are fed up of looking at skirts for the minute! :rotfl:

What sort of material is it, it looks like a heavy cotton, and what did you line it with?

    Sorry - I'm so nosey. :o

It's a lovely skirt Sunshine well done! It took me about four months to finish my one from sewing class so 5 lessons is well impressive. I have that pattern at home which I'm planning on using to turn a 70s curtain into a skirt (E, same as yours) - was it fairly straightforward?

I agree patterns are totally baffling! They seem in a foreign language sometimes, I can never fathom what they want you to do!

    Hi

You arent nosey!! Its cotton of some kind but not heavy. It has a really light sheen to it when you move it about. Not shiny (as that would be awful) but its not completely matt/dull if you know what I mean (cant really explain and didnt pay attention when I bought it!!) I just lined it with black lining, matt stuff rather than shiny so thats maybe why it looks heavier than it is. Waistband was done with lightweight interfacing. I agree re doing lots in different colours. Now that I know I have something that fits I think I will end up with quite a few!! Im starting on a dress next week which I think will be much harder but want to learn as much as i can as classes finish in 9 weeks. Absolutely love my sewing classes! :)

p.s Was going to send you a message today anyway. You might already have this or know about it but htere is a magazine out called make jewellery. Website is www.makejewellerymagazine.com Read about it in my sew mag yesterday and thought of you.

    Thanks for that !
Lots of jewellery and beading magazines I come across are American, the tutorials are fine but if you want to use one of the suppliers its a bit of a problem.

This is great I will keep an eye out for it this weekend!

Thanks. Yes was pretty straightforward. Its only 3 pieces - 1 front and 2 back plus waistband. 6 darts in total (although I only put in 4), lining, zip and button. I got lots of help from the teacher but think I could attempt one myself now. Sizes were a bit strange. Said I was a 14 based on my measurements but Im actually an 8 and made an 8 and was fine (had to take out one set of darts and was tight round waist.) I stitched all my lining and altered it before I sewed the main skirt together so I knew I had the right fit just incase!!!

    Hi folk,

Well got my material yesterday to make some aprons and some red cotton fabric to make a table cloth, starting at the beginner end here haha, I have a question, How do you folks make sure you have straight lines when cutting, I measured out 56 x 56 x 56 x56, or so i thought, then when i went to join marks up was about an inch out on measurements :( I do not posess a table big enought to lay fabric on, I know this is probably a really easier problem to solve but for some reaseon i just cant see it. am puzzled :/
:j Started my weightloss journey, its neverending!! :j

I have same problem. Posted about this a number of pages back asking same. Think most people said they use cardboard or paper to get right size then draw round and cut and think some said rotary cutter (but you would need a mat or table for that) I cant cut straight lines for toffee!!!

Edit: Page 54 - post 1075 (or thereabouts) onwards....

Sewing pattern sizes are completely different from bought clothes - you will always measure up in a couple of sizes larger than you would buy. Having said that, it obviously didn't work in your case :D
