    Hello,

I love sewing, but it's new to me, and I've been teaching myself to do a few things. I now have a sewing machine :j so want to try my hand at making curtains. One thing I'm lacking is a good pair of scissors. Can anyone recommend any good quality scissors at an affordable price?
    Thank you!

Fiskars are a good brand - depends on what you class as affordable though!
As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again

    thanks for suggesting cushions

I have found some material I got for cushions ages ago - so will make some non zip cushions for starters

Does anyone have a pattern for a peg bag, the sort that has a coat hanger in the top?

    Thanks,

Could you get your existing machine serviced and get an overlocker with the money you've saved? I'd love an overlocker :o

    I have an old overlocker..and I LOVE it. :)

The janome 5030 looks like a good machine

Will have a look at that, thanks. Have seen that make advertised in mags and thought they looked nice.

Is there anything wrong with your machine? Many older machines work just as well if not better than lower priced new models.
Track down any shops near you that take machines for servicing and ask how much a service costs. I have recently found out that Silver Viscount service most makes of machine and arrange for a courier to collect it from your home for a fee of £15 and a general service is around £35. Then keep the remaining money and save toward a better machine or buy lots of lovely fabrics.
For buying a new one the best way is to have a look in the shops to see what is available and have a natter with the shop owner. Don't dismiss the idea of a second hand or ex demo machine from a shop. You can pick up some great bargains that way and will still usually have a warranty from the store

There's probably not much wrong with it that a service wouldn't fix tbh, but I'm '30-10' in a week and thought I'd treat myself for my birthday. I fancy one that is programmable and can do some automatic stuff just to be swishy. :D
Hadn't thought of ex-demo though, so will look into them..that might save me a few quid.
    Thanks everyone.:)

    evening all
Have not been on for a long time but have had a read through and seen the lovely makes that have been done.
I went back to work part time and have been out in the garden a bit as the weather has got a bit better.

I have made a couple of bits including a cooks apron and am now sewing snow men for my christmas cards. They are tree decorations so Ill put them on the cards so that they can be taken off and saved (hopefully).
Now im getting more organised I hope to get back in the swing of tghings and get on with more sewing.

Found a shop when we went out for the day which was cramed full of fabric, now need to find somewhere local to buy patterns and then I will go back and buy as much as I can. Or does anyone know of a good web site where you can get patterns at a reasonable price please

    Take care

hey everyone, hope you had a glorious bank holiday! we went to whitstable in kent (and i got some amazing fabric!)

anyhow, heres how my quilt is coming along, last night i put the 3 layers together and sewed on the bias binding, then started to quilt! im using zig zag stitch so any wonky lines wont be obvious. i love it! my top stitiching on my bias binding leave a lot to be desired though! :rotfl:73182D0D-DA74-41AB-8714-18F46C6F8E4D-1197-0000027A781DF2CF_zps7ac3e255.jpg

That's beautiful keza. I normally do the binding last. Well that's what I've been taught any way
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!
