Hi all
I haven't posted on here for ages, but I have broken my silence because I really, really want to start sewing. I'd ideally like to quilt and applique. I am a total novice, and would appreciate any tips to help get me started, for example should I hand sew or get a machine? Any advice would be very helpful indeed. I have been looking through this thread and I'm in awe of some of the things you have all made.
There are no classes to help me learn around here, so I will have to go it alone.
Thanks in advance0 -

Hi, I have been missing on here - such a busy time of year - you don't know what to do next. I went on a coach trip to Windsor/Henley on Thames and Highclere Castle - Downton Abbey.Decluttering Achieved - 2023 - 10,364 Decluttering - 2024 - 8,365 August - 0/45

Hmo, lovely make up wrap, I think my YD and ED would like these if I get time to make them before Xmas xx
Havent had any time for sewing still. Getting there with the dining chairs but not finished yet. I have three fully covered just needing braid, one is nearly fully covered but ran out of staples and was too tired to hunt for another box yesterday. Fifth chair has some of the back on it but needs the padding and front put on and the seat cover. Sixth chair hasnt been started yet. I am hoping to get the fourth and fifth ones covered today and that will just be the one left to do during the week.
Oh think how lovely your home is going to be in time for Christmas! wonderfully made over.
I havent been near any of my crafts since I did the Mary on Thursday. Just not been feeling very inspired, not that there isnt enough here to inspire, just me down in the dumps I suppose.
I shall be racing to catch my tail in the end! So little sorted out. Luckily, (but Sadly) DGD goes to her granddad on the 23rd, and not back until the 27th, so apart form christmas Day where I have now been invited to my eldest daughters I shall be the proverbial "home alone". So the inspiration to do is just rather sapped out of me. What should have been 5 wonderful days with my BF (EXBF) doesnt really inspire me to be creating and making. etc just feel too miserable.
I shall have to sew as I need to finish of the christmas presents for my family though. Maybe tomorrow will be a good day, we go to see Santa so maybe I will get the spirit back!.When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
I hope so Mooloo, something will click, we all go through the days when we cant find inspiration and then all of a sudden we are back on course again.
I made a good start this morning, finished covering the 5 chairs while dinner was cooking, now just the one to go, that needs stripping first. I was hoping YD might make a start on it as she did most of the others (well made a start on them so saved my hands and arms a bit) but I think the novelty of using the tools has worn off so looks like I will have to strip it myself. My hands are too sore and achy tonight from using the staple gun and we are out tomorrow so looks like it will be Tuesday before I can start on it. It will need a couple of days at least to do as it has to be varnished and left over night before I can cover it.0 -
Mumto2monkeys Im not a quilter so dont have any tips for you,
you dont need a machine to try sewing, see how you get on,
I should think there'll be loads of info on utube or quilting blogs/yahoo groups/websites
There is a sewing craft shop near me in Reading where you can go use their machines by the hour, maybe you could look for somthing similar0 -
Thanks hotpot. I appreciate your help

Mum2monkeys....You can quilt by hand just takes much longer. I used to way back then! Maybe pop into the library and borrow some books so you can keep looking back over them, which I find better than utube sometimes. As already mentioned lots on/quilting blogs etc. Looking forward to seeing your makes in the future.
florenceem....Yes the back is plain fabric with the houses machine stitched on top, with some hand embroidery as well.0
