I LOVE the advent calendars, so clever! I bought a little wooden tree with drawers from Next for our advent calendar, but I can't fit Celebrations or Quality Street in it - will just have to eat them without putting them in the tree boxes!

I'm having trouble with one of my presents - would someone mind popping over to my blog and having a look for me please? I can't get pictures to post properly on here. Thanks in advance!

when you do an envelop pillow your back piece needs to be at least 5inc bigger than the front.

so if the cut fabric for the front measures 16inc the back piece needs to be 21inch then you cut that in half so you would have 2 x 10.5

you turn a 1/4 inch hem and then another on each of the sides that meets at the middle so you loose 1inch so you should be left with a 4inch overlap once all finished.

hope that helps for next time.

as for now you could sew on a strip of velcro quite a good size peice or how about making horizontal button holes on one side and sewing ribbon on the other and thread the ribbon through the button holes to pull it together.

    Well done PollysKettle!

I just had a look Sarah & your opening is across the biggest bit of the pillow - which is probably why it gapes. When I did DS pillow, I put the opening nearer to one end about 1/4 way down, which worked well. However, I should have overlapped the fabric more because It still gapes a little and you can see the pillow peeping out.

Maybe a press stud or velcro (easy option), or your option sounds lovely

Otherwise, I wonder if you sewed around it again, just 1/4 or 1/2 inch, if that would help. on one of the blogs I read, the lady always makes her cushion covers a tad smaller than the cushion pad so that you get a more rounded, puffy cushion. I imagine you would still get a bit of a gape but it might not be as bad.

that would only work if you had enough overlap in the first place:)
  • Thanks HMO, it's the first proper project I've ever made so am still learning! I found lots of instructions online, but they weren't very clear. I think I'll try the velcro options as I can't do buttonholes yet and it's getting perilously close to Christmas!

it looks fab, envelope cushions are great ive made loads this is the way i do mine

say the cushion pad is 14x14

cut the front fabric piece 15x15 which allows for sewing a 1/2 ich seem
cut the back fabric piece 20 x 15 then cut it in half so you have 2 pieces at 10x15

then make as as you have done it should give you a good 4inch overlap when finished

Agree with both these suggestions. I read on another forum the advice to make the cushion cover a good 1-2" smaller all round than the pad and it really helps make for a plump cushion.

You could add extra filling to the existing cushion, as another way of plumping it out and avoiding the gape. It is a really pretty cushion, anyway! :)

Pennib, beautiful cushion, the writing makes it look so special xx

Hmo, lovely make up wrap, I think my YD and ED would like these if I get time to make them before Xmas xx

Havent had any time for sewing still. Getting there with the dining chairs but not finished yet. I have three fully covered just needing braid, one is nearly fully covered but ran out of staples and was too tired to hunt for another box yesterday. Fifth chair has some of the back on it but needs the padding and front put on and the seat cover. Sixth chair hasnt been started yet. I am hoping to get the fourth and fifth ones covered today and that will just be the one left to do during the week.
